Horses....anyone Got 'em?

Bloozoo2, I could never afford full livery what you want is a wee hairy cob and a big field! :D
I so wish that's possible - but I'm a Thoroughbred kinda person. Just grew up with them and find it incredibly hard to find cobs enjoyable to ride  it sounds aweful to say, but it feels like I'm riding a bale of hay
But it's quite rare to come across a thoroughbred (in the UK) kept in a field all year round - and TB's cost an arm and a leg to feed and work :/

I've always been in the same situation Cat - I'm sure if I tried, I could afford to keep it at full livery. But the cost of that in Surrey - which would be my closest "countryside" is just insanely expensive. I can't justify having a horse and then only seeing it twice a week (on weekend). My work is too long hours to do anything before or after work.

But for years now I've shared and that seemed to work relatively well. I've always been lucky enough to find horses that were primarily mind only to ride - the owners had babies (;)) or just no time or interest anymore, but didn't want to sell their horses either. So I could do pretty much whatever I liked in terms of showing / competing etc.

Apart from the last two I've had that were complete and utter insane nutters - so much for "school masters" :grr: more like "suicidal, lets see if we can seriously injure or kill our new sharer".

hehehe yeah! now i live in North London, unless i have £45 spare, i can't go riding (that's how much it costs for one 1 hour hack in epping forest i think, absolute rip off!!)

the last horse i shared was psycho too, lost my nerve a bit on him, he was called Tequila, and acted like he had too much of it, thought nothing of chucking me off over jumps, or bolting around the ring completely ignoring little old me, what a little.....! anyway. that was when i lived in the essex countryside and horses were easier to come by.

now i just have to sit and dream and watch the police horses go by, and occasionally 25+ army horses go up the high street for a run on hampstead heath, that's quite impressive!

 My last one was a 17.1 TB and bucked me off every single time - I kid you not. Never in my life have I come across such a serial bucker (he didn't have back or saddle problems, that was checked several times. He did the same with the owner, but she thought he was just full of beans - more like bad manners I think !!). I'm not afraid of bucking and I generally don't have a problem falling if I know it's coming (though preferably not on the road in front of a car - which he tried to do). In the end I just got fed up and also annoyed with the pinched nerve in my hip (as a result of all the constant falling and jerking), so called it quits. That was last year but haven't looked for another one yet - will do soon I hope.

I've ridden in Epping Forest before (the same as Richmond Park) and is just insanely expensive. And that's not what I call riding by plodding in single file :/

If you have a car, make your way down to Hacking with a Difference - they are all retrained (extremely well mannered) race horses and the riding is stunning :D

oo thanks i'll look that up!
if anyone knows of any good places in gloucestershire (cotswolds/cheltenham areas) let me know too, my mum used to ride as well and thats where she lives, we're both dying to get back into it!

 I think im going to quit uni and set up a business! I wonder if people would pay that much for being made for sit for an hour on a horse who bucks, rears and jumps into a ditch at the site of a lorry (depending on his mood!)

When i used to have lessons they were £5 for an hour  And i live in Tewkesbury so you're more than welcome to come and have a ride on Charlie when you're down here  If you decide against that theres Southam Riding stables, or Kayte farm (both in Cheltenham) used to give lessons but i dont know if they do anymore.. I just had a riding instructor who came to us for lessons so cant help too much..

Dont rule it out I have know quite a few people who have kept their TBs out and TB crosses. I think it all depends on the horse and how you introduce them to it. and good rugs!! http://www.lucindamcalpine.co.uk
Have a wee look at this web site I found it really interesting and it challenges the views of how preformance bred horses etc should be kept. Sorry I am such a bore about these things I just really interested in it!

I know what you mean about a bale of hay!! I like that cause I used to ride Brody mostly bareback I was glad he was broad! But I always feel like I am sitting on a brick wall when I ride something fine! Takes a while to find my balance!! If at all!

when i was little, i went to this riding school, they had a pair of Haflingers, gorgeous, but very difficult to ride unless you could do the splits!!!!!!

He He Try riding a 17hh + Clydsedale!! :X

Takes a bit of getting used to! Mind you was harder trying to get up but I looked like a pea on a mountain!

But nothing like galloping him accross the fields! TB's are fast but its not the same soundtrack that you get with a chunky! Feel like your a knight going into war! Amazing! Oh I am making myself worse!! Going to go visit Derry this weekend I think!

Would sell me soul I think to be able to take him to the beach an just go hell for leather :hyper:

I am sad!!

Now that would probably scare the living daylights out of me ! Not only a big horse, but a huge big horse thundering across the fields !

Thanks for those links - I'll certainly investigate. Perhaps when we buy a house later this year I can convince the other half to move a bit further out of London closer to some countryside - though he will probably have none of it :grr:

Enjoy seeing him on the weekend !

I like it thats the attitude!! Talking of your other half of course?! :)
Yeah it does help if you can get a fair bit of land about you finding the right place is the hardest bit!

Scary but exhilerating! Altho was riding bareback to the field once and he took off nothing but a headcollar and lead to hang on to!!that was V. Scary!! :look: took me five mins to get off him cause my legs were shaking so much!!!
