I don't recall seeing any horse threads in here, so I was just wondering if anyone rides or has horses?

I've got 2! I'll post pics after some more people do! :)

I totally feel for you! I have only been 6 months without horsey contact and feel like I am going mad!! I didnt get my first horse til I was 18 and got a student loan! I had him for 3 years then had to sell which broke myheart and I got Brody in 2003 and then had to sell him not getting another one til I know I wont have to sell it again its just too upsetting! Just going to borrow other peoples from now on!

If anyone wants a horse you can have mine - He's evil

He's a retired (im too lazy/busy to ride him) 15.1 Connemara. I used to do lots of showjumping and eventing with him until he had a nasty fall and broke his spine and pelvis :( Now he just stands in his field or stable and eats, and sometimes i take him for a ride through the fields

Pic of him a couple of years ago at a show having a snack between classes ( you have NO idea how long it takes to clean that bit  ) and another one of him about 8 years ago at a pony club thing at Gatcombe Horse Trials - Was a team thing, Charlie won the individual thing but the rest of our team were crap so we came nearly last i think

I feel the same as Catxx, I'm also 24 and have wanted a horse since I was a child, went to a stables a couple of times back in 1999 with a friend and used to get a free ride for helping out! Never had any lessons though! My friend and I are plotting to start ridding in the summer (cash flow permitting)!

Jessica I love your Conemara, Anna I'm also really jealous of you too having all those horses so wish I could keep one!

Thank you he is a stunner! I keep intouch with his new mum who is very successful in the show ring with her natives and coloureds Brody will do his first show in May I think so I will be waddling down to see how he gets on!! Fingers crossed he might qualify for Horse of the Year show or Olympia!!

As soon as I am able I'll be going back to helping at the Riding for the Disabled. But not in Glasgow this time going to start at a small place near Irvine. If you dont have much cash for lessons and have time on your hands and just want to be around horses look for a RDA near you it is such a worthwhile cause and they are always looking for keen helpers! I cant wait to get back into it! Your not garanteed a ride but you'll learn alot just on the ground which is just as important!

What is the RDA? Just so I can google to see if there are any near by! I don't mind doing the mucking out and grooming of a horse even if I dont get a ride. I used to do that when I stayed with friends down in wales and they had horses I'd help with the mucking out and grooming it was great fun (probably not as fun now that I'm older but I'll give it a go lol)

Jude your horse was stunning hope you'll be posting later on when he's doing the show jumping etc? would love to hear how he does!

I've always been in the same situation Cat - I'm sure if I tried, I could afford to keep it at full livery. But the cost of that in Surrey - which would be my closest "countryside" is just insanely expensive. I can't justify having a horse and then only seeing it twice a week (on weekend). My work is too long hours to do anything before or after work.

But for years now I've shared and that seemed to work relatively well. I've always been lucky enough to find horses that were primarily mind only to ride - the owners had babies (;)) or just no time or interest anymore, but didn't want to sell their horses either. So I could do pretty much whatever I liked in terms of showing / competing etc.

Apart from the last two I've had that were complete and utter insane nutters - so much for "school masters" :grr: more like "suicidal, lets see if we can seriously injure or kill our new sharer".

RDA = Riding for the Disabled. One of my first ponies had been trained for that so we used to let our local RDA use her at weekends and i used to help out. I was only about 8 so couldn't do much but used to lead my pony around. The kids used to love riding the horses and its a really worthwhile thing to do - especially if you volunteer ;)

I've been a volunteer with RDa for 15 yrs and I am a qualified Able bodied WHIP(not as kinky as it sounds! I can teach pony & cart driving) and I have my Group instructors badge. Been teaching RDA for about 5 yrs and I love it but when I moved house it was just too far to travel and the place that does it near the new house is during the week and I couldnt make it so been missing it like mad.

It is so much fun and I love to feel like I can help people to find new things and abilities. I the "kids" I taught I've know since I started and we all get on very well and they have differing abilities but to an outsider coming in to watch my class would have thought I was a tyrant! :D Even my mum said I was too hard on them! But I always felt that they should be getting taught something and progressed rather than paying for an hours pony ride round and round the school. Got to http://www.riding-for-disabled.org.uk/
for more info as to where they are in the UK. Some places do a work for rides scheme and when I was younger we were allowed to ride and even got to take the ponies into local shows helped to keep them sane!!

Bloozoo2, I could never afford full livery what you want is a wee hairy cob and a big field! :D
Brody lived out 24/7 all year round with no rugs or extra feeding cost me £10 a week and he roamed over 150 acres (shld only have been 50 but cows kept pulling the fence down! )
No shoes on cause he had good hard feet and in 3 years they only needed trimmed twice! Very cheap horse to keep! Just hard to keep clean. I've always kept my horses or loan ponies out for cost and I think it keeps them happier especially if you dont have loads of time to ride etc. And that includes a trotter and a clydesdale. Never had a sane horse either!! Brody was safe but not quite right in the head!!

Natsuko, Thank you!! I will keep you posted! He is going for performance coloured classes in the CHAPS thing and then cob classes and coloured classes think she wants to try a bit of dressage with him too. And believe me you'll still enjoy the mucking out and grooming!! I go to my friends just now just to hug her wee shetland!!
