So...once a year I give a talk at the local 4-H club on a different breed of horses for the kids. I'm stuck this year for my breed to do, and I'd like to do a rarer horse people haven't heard about much. If any of you have any rarer breeds you've had/heard about/found something interesting about, could you please post here? There's a lot of breeds I know that I could do, but I need help deciding on one. :p

For the record, I've already done:
Pintabian
Gypsy Vanner
Irish Draft
Suffolk

Thank you. :*

What about the Friesian?
I think they are beautiful horses and really show themselves off really well.

The Arab is a good horse to talk about with plenty of history as is the Highland Pony, the Appaloosa as well.

Good luck with what you choose.

Akhal-Teke

Or, if you want a horse that someone MAY have heard of ( ) go for the connemara!! Fantastic kids ponies, not too common in the US so im told and a really old breed with lots of history :)

(Of course i may be biased about the connemaras, Charlie hates kids, but he's just moody!lol)

:yahoo: Those horse pics are amazing. Can't belive how many different breeds there are :hyper:

Thanks for all the posts everyone! The Friesan, Akhal-Teke, Norwegian Fjord, Knabstrup, Falabella, and Oldenburg are what I'm down to now. The others are beaten to death around here, with the exception of the Lusitano, which I forget to mention I already did a short speech on....I could lengthen it though. *dreams of less work* :p

Anyway, thanks so much for all the ideas! Feel free to keep 'em coming!

Awww, one of my favorites. Unfortunatly, they are also a common horse for a speech around here. :( Sorry, I know I'm a pain!!

I'm leaning towards the Knapstrup right now, I've seen a few of those and they are beautiful horses. I just need to see if I can find enough info on them. :)

 The Friesian to me is just the epitomy of Power, Presence, Elegance, Poise, Beauty & Grace!
Not to mention fantastic temprament, stunning all-rounder and great with kids even - what more could one want from a horse?

One day I'll have one :D

I agree Bloo, werent they also used by Knights in the medieaval times? I know a lot of knights preferred the larger dray type of horse but the Friesian not only strong was quicker and more agile in battle.

Most of the horses used in the medieval times don't really exist anymore. We just have horses that are "like" them.

i say irish draught or marwari.

there are plenty of endangered breeds you might want to consider, as well

OO I gotta go with the Irish Draught or the beautiful (I love those pics Bloo) of the Frieisan.
Whatever you choose Anna, I am sure you will do an awesome job! :good:

you could go for the Exmoor

or Dartmoor Ponies (ancient English Breeds)

or the Cleveland Bay (another English breed, horse this time)

or how about going REALLY ancient and doing the Przewalski horse?
