Close up on the guy on the end's tail...really bad

ewwwww. those poor little guys were in rough shape!
It's a tough choice isn't it? buying them encourages the stupidness and poor pet care to continue but it's almost impossible for a mensch to walk away from those filthy, tiny cups. And I'd like to know what betta breeder allows their fish to be treated that way?
scumbags! (I hope that word's allowed) :grr:

I've carried filthy cups to the Walmart manager & complained too. Haven't we all? It's kind of like a Betta Forum right of passage by now isn't it? But I can't walk out with all of those poor babies, we've got way too many rescued animals here as it is. (feels like a zoo, my husband says!)

I think it's wonderful that you were able to do it sorrell - good on ya! :kana:

2 down :/ The guy with the fungus tail and the one with the fungus chin...the other fungus boy is having a rough time too, but I'm watching him

I did the same thing last Sunday, but I could only take one. So I took the worst. I felt so bad for them. The cups are always right next to one another, which has to stress the guys out. And the cups have been moved to the back of the pet aisles, probably so patrons CAN'T see the condition of the water, etc.

The new fella has been in a 1/2 gallon bowl with a regiment of BettaMax. Today's water change was almost entirely the prepared water I keep. I was sure after sitting in waste for God knows how long he definitely needed a little TLC.

He seems very happy, appetite has improved over the week, and is very fond of blood worms. He's the most aggressive betta I've had, and actually flares at the mirror. He hasn't started making bubbles yet, but I'm sure that's to come.

As soon as my dividers arrive, I'll move him to my 10 gallon tank; he can have one side, and my tetras the other. And I'm also on the look out for a 2 1/2 gallon container just for him at some point.

your a hero sorrel, iv been tempted to do the very same, even if their in their cups with clean water their better off than they were. i hope u teach that walmart good. i too have saved a couple fish from them before, it feals good to know you've made a differance in the fishes life. how many did u end up getting, when they are healthy again if u need someone to adopt a couple i'd be glad to lend u hand.

Third iffy is gone -_- I still hold firm that it was better they died in clean, medicated water, then those cups

The rest are looking wonderful  I'll work on getting some pictures up later today, first have to make my trip out to Wal-Mart :sly: Gotta get some make-up on first though...sex sells...maybe it saves too :shifty:

Awww poor little guys, that's so horrible. That's so awesome of you to save them all, wow 14 at one time!! :flex: :kana:

At least the three who didn't make it had one night in a caring home

Hope you can knock some sense into those wal-mart people and if that doesn't work, well you can always physically knock some sense into them :grr: Definitely keep us updated on the fishies and walmart!

Good news!

I made my Wal-Mart trip, and gave my little speech, the manager that I talked to was absolutely wonderful. She went on and on about how unacceptable the situation was for customers and the fish. She had me show her the bettas they still had and I pointed out what was wrong with each of them and how it all pointed to poor water quality, and how those cups need to be changed daily. I also pointed out that I am angry that I paid them to take care of their fish poorly :grr:

Well, two things directly came of this. First she refunded me in store credit for the fish I bought, and cash for the three who have died  Secondly, she told me they are having a district manager meeting this afternoon and all the managers are to come and present an issue. She said she is going to present the bettas as hers

I also recieved a PM from a lady who lives in town and she would like some of these guys, so looks like things are turning around for them

Way to go Sorrell!

Lets hope they do take your points into consideration and all bettas in future arriving at that store will be well cared for till someone buys them

Sorry to hear some of the guys didn't make it :(

That's awesome. It really does depend on the store manager. A good manager can walk back to the pet department daily and tell the employees to change the water. That takes all of two minutes. And good employees won't have to be told EVERY DAY, they'll do it because it is part of their duties in that department. (Sheesh, what is so hard about that  )

I'm so glad you got your money back. And I'm also so glad that you got your hands on somebody who CARES. It's so frustrating when you're trying to express your concerns to somebody and you can see "Is she done yet?" all over their face :sly:

That is absolutely wonderful.

I have done the same in the past, but not to that extreme. Just one (so far...) I walked out of their with their worst boy (his water was disgusting and I could only tell he was a pinkish color) and a 5 gallon tank for him. He turned out to be my most aggressive and fun fish yet.

Generally the walmart here is *okay*, but they tend to stuff their 8 gallon tanks to the brim with giant goldfish.

im so glad that you got in contact with a decent manager! that was good of her to refund you for taking them all. sorry to hear about the there that didnt make it, as everyone else is saying :byebye: . I was at wal-mart today and they had about 6 bettas in cups with about... hmm i dont knwo how much water but it barely covered their bodies. there was no one around and i hunted someone down to fill the cups up a little more. one of the cups had some toy thing that a kid probably put in and another had this little rock and one had a penny. like WHAT THE! how hard is it to take care of these fish properly? my aunt works at this wal-mart [i'm out of town this weekend, i dont live here and would normally keep on top of this myself, if not buy these fish] and i asked her to talk to the manager to ensure that these bettas are being properly cared for. also, the other fish tanks had so many dead fish in them it was revolting. at least two in each tank and 5 in one tank [some little cories and guppies]

Wow! That's great, and wonderful she was willing to give you store credit for the ones that were still alive, yet your still keeping them (and not having to give them back to that hell hole). Something you may want to do is go back each week (or however often you would want) and check to see if their conditions are better, and if they are...call that 800 wal mart number and give praise to the manager you spoke with. We are always quick to complain about people but when it's the other way around I don't think most people are so quick to praise people, and a call to the 800 number would be great IF she follows through with what she said and continues to watch that they are taken care of.
