right now I'm looking at the stand alone tanks, as I'd rather build my base out of something other than saw dust boards
I'm looking at acrylic... & see there are many different configurations... obviously I'd want one that doesn't leak in a few years, there are 2 options for fish... I will have to move my barbs up to a bigger tank soon ( Tin Foil Barbs, Denison Barbs & some assorted others ) but I'm likely to add them to a tradition rectangle in the basement, beside the 55 gallon they are currently housed in... those tanks are not generally viewed by visitors... instead I'm wanting to put one one the main floor of the house, where they can be viewed by company... the barbs could certainly go there, but otherwise I'm wide open on what to put in the tank... so suggestions are welcome

I've always wanted to do a discus fish tank, but my water has always been all wrong... but after I get the new RO unit installed & get everything figured out, that could be an option...

tank sizes & shapes that intrigue me right now are...

a 48" X 18" X 30" 120 gallon Tall
a 36" X 36" X 20" 115 gallon Triangle shaped
a 60" X 18" X 24" 120 gallon Basic rectangular

what would the advantages be, your choice if you had a spot for it, & what would you put in it to show company???

Triangle sounds very unique, cool idea. I love that you have Denison barbs! They’re my favorite fish but haven’t been able to keep them

When I move the barbs to a bigger tank, I thought I would add a few more… they are only in a group of 3 right now… they seem happy and are doing well, despite my bad water… they are supposed to be happiest in a bigger group… mine are about 4 inches long right now…betting a group of adults would be an awesome sight

Have a very good idea of the fish species you intend putting into the new tank before you buy it. Not all fish will work in certain shaped/size tanks. The barbs for example will not do well in a triangular tank, but need length, because they are fairly active swimmers. Taller tanks sacrificing the length are inappropriate for such fish.

Yep… that’s why I’m starting this about 6 months before I buy the tank… actually my favorite tank so far, is the tall, but that would be a discus / Angel fish type tank… I may buy a rectangular 120 for the barbs, as well, to keep in the basement, if finances stay good… if money gets tight, I’ll still get the rectangular 120, and put it upstairs, and move the barbs upstairs
… there are a lot of fish I could see adding to the barb tank ( including some more Denison barbs ) but the tank is very close to capacity right now, so those new fish will have to wait for the bigger tank…

There isn't much you can do about a pending issue, namely the effects of increased aggression and stress because there are too few of the species. Applies to all shoaling/schooling freshwater fish, and here the Denison barbs are really up against it. research before acquisition is so important.

I really like this one, it's most expensive, of the ones I'm looking at, but, that would be a good tank, assuming I can get my water straightened out, to do a Discus tank... & would be easier to fit in the living room
