My honeys are massive pigs... when I feed the wafers to my snails and shrimp they gobbled up and steal so much they look bloated on those days.  Sooooo... I've had the idea to make a little cage out of that hard plastic mesh that many of you make dividers with... but... my question is... I will need to cut a few pieces and secure them together... but... what can I use that is safe to secure them together with?  I am thinking to make 5 sides (top and 4 sides) and I will anchor it down when needed... also cut little doors big enough for the snails to get under and not my honeys... but I haven't anything that will fasten the sides together!

In the past I made livebearer breeding boxes from craft mesh and used synthetic 'wool' to sew the sides together. Just hold the sides in position , lining up the holes in the mesh, and sew through from one piece to the other. It does look a bit home made but if it works........

Oh!  I didn't realize I could use synthetic wool... is there any sort of type that I should avoid?  Should I not worry about the wool leaking color or whatnot?  I shall have to look what my stuff is made from.

I don't care if it looks homemade, it will only be in there for as long as it takes the snails to find and eat the wafers... which isn't usually that long!  LOL

I used white, as craft mesh is white it looked better.

With a breeding net, it needed to float. I used polystyrene panels for that. But you can see from the photo how I made it.

Great idea! I need to do this with my honeys. They are the biggest pigs!

For some reason I couldn't see the image yesterday.  That is exactly what I plan to do, but smaller (snail/shrimp size) to keep out my honeys.  I'm going to cut a door into each side so they can get in and out and place it upside down on the gravel... maybe with a small rock on top to keep it from moving.  I think I will make it later today!

Done!

Amelia (the honey) was the very first to discover the cage and has been having a really good look at it but won't be finding a way inside!

I'm going to do a similar thing, but make a whole box with a string attached so I can pull it up each time I go to feed. :) That way I won't have to stick my hand in the tank to get it. hehe.

I was thinking of that but thought I'd try this first.  At the moment... I think I need to put a 4th door on the last side as that seems to be the side that the snails ended up on confused how to get it!  LOL

I started to worry that white yarn would end up going brown sooner or later like the filter sponge so I opted for black.

Haha, too funny!
I'll post a pic once I make mine. I'll be putting 4 doors in it too I think.  I have the plastic canvas, just not any yarn. I'll be getting some tomorrow :)

Actually, a change of plans happened and we went out town today. Here is mine :)

I may have to tweak it a bit, but I think it'll work for the most part!

That's pretty neat! Mind taking a video of how you use it when you feed?

NOTE TO SELF.... make sure to push it into the gravel far enough.... LOL

I might go back and narrow the doors slightly... I am wondering if she got in there sideways!!  LOL  Anyhow... she is the piggy I am trying to keep out!
