Hello,

For the last 3 days our pair of Honduran Red Point have been showing breeding signs and took control of one of our caves, This morning they was acting different than usual both fish was in the cave more and doing something on the bottom of the cave. We went out and when we got back home we watched the female HRP go into the cave get the 'eggs' i say 'eggs' because they are wriggling about or so it seems. The male is now picking them up one by one and what seems like he's putting them back in or could be eating them, We can't see inside the cave to know what's going on in there.

Is this normal behaviour or is there something we should be doing? I can provide video's and pics if needed to see the situation.

Sounds perfectly normal behaviour to me, both mum and dad with guard the babies and scoop them up in their mouths and spit them back into a cave or hollow. My convicts do the same, but to day had to remove the male as he started fighting with the female. Just watch for aggression between the pair as sometimes with cichlids the male will want to breed again before the female is ready and they will fight and sadly sometimes can get really nasty and one of them may be killed. If all goes well you should see mum & dad taking the babies for a swim round the tank, my convicts to its fantastic to watch and at 11.30 on the dot each night she "puts them all to bed" back in the pot.

Congratulations on the babies btw

Do you have any other fish in your tank where they had babies? I'm a little worried about the rest of our fish. We have a 4ft tank with Angels, Festive Cichlid's, Platy's, 1 male fighter 3 female fighter's, rainbow shark, 2 ram's, gourami's, black neon's, cory's kribs and algae eaters, If they take them for a swim i fear there will be world war 3 as when the platy's had babies every fish in the tank was below the breeding trap trying to get at the babies.

My convicts are in a tank on their own. Your other fish maybe in danger from the HRP's I have no knowledge of these particular fish, but would guess like other cichlid parents they would defend their young and could harm or even kill some of the other fish, I think the angels may the most threat. Best post again in the cichlid section, there are people there with better knowledge and experience than me.

hehe good to know

It seems all the 'eggs' that was outside are now gone, It's annoying that i dont know exactly what's going on inside the cave but hopefully it'll be good news.
