I've been looking around and I notice that some people buy flourescent shop lights from Home Depot for $8.00. My questions are pretty simple: 1) What is the length of it? 2) Is it single or double tubes? 3) Does it include tubes or are they sold separately? (I mean $8.00 is a bit too cheap for a shoplight with bulbs...). Thank you in advance :)

HHHHHHHHHHHMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM:
I have looked at those fixtures (and others) and even after adding the tubes and some sort of system to stand them they look pretty inexpensive. Then you have to address the reflector issue, the light should be directed downwards into the tank. This issue can also be overcome. However, there is one little snag that nags away at me. This fixture was not designed to be in a high humidity environment as is the top of a fish tank. The CSA or UL approvals likely do not apply to the use of the fixture in close proximity to a fish tank. That would prompt the question, in my mind, as to the impact of this lack of approval having some sort of impact on insurance coverage and not in a positive way. My conclusion has been to "bite the proverbial buller" and use lighting that is designed and approved for use as a lighting fixture for a fish tank. The small cost savings looks pertty small in comparison to an invalid insurance policy in the event of a loss!

Sure, you have to build a quick box to mount it in, and give it a cheap light diffuser panel. All of the electrical components are housed in a grounded metal case, if anything were to corrode & arc, it would be contained, just like with an outlet box. I've been using them for years, in the nice humid environment of a fish room. With nice gfi outlets & circut breakers.

Thanks for the replies guys. This was just in case I can convince my dad to give me the glass 60 gallon tank so I can setup a community of wild bettas.
