Holiday fish food

Hi everyone, what can I use to feed my fish.
I’ve googled so long and still can’t find anything suitable apart from those two types of feeding blocks, the white ones and meaty ones that slowly release food. Will my fish be ok in these for a short while, 4 days?

If it is just 4 days, you are better off not feeding. Those blocks are trash.

I’ve used gel based holiday foods with much better results than regular holiday foods. When I get back I’ll get a picture of them. There called Gel drops If I remember correctly.

Do you have a neighbor who can feed them for you? If so, individually wrap each meal and then have the person feed once every other day. Hide the rest of your food to prevent anyone from adding 'just an extra pinch' which always leads to disaster. If that is not an option, consider using an Eheim fish feeder. They are reliable.

If I'm away for fewer than 14 days, I don't feed. Longer than that, and I get a friend to feed carefully.

I go away a couple of times a year, and don't lose fish. They are back in breeding condition within a week, if you're gone for a week.

Holiday food blocks are made for simple reasons. We care about and worry if our fish go hungry, and the hobby industry answers the demand. They give us lousy holiday blocks, and we give them money. They like the money a lot, and we feel better. The fish? They just get dirty water from it.

All my tanks are planted, and bacteria and micro-organisms are good short term fish food.

Another vote for just leave them and they'll be fine. I am regularly away for 1-2 weeks (occasionally 3) and never had an issue.

I was just wondering if anyone else here had tried gel-based holiday foods? After I came back from holiday the tank was spotless and the water quality was fine. But my tank is heavily planted.

I haven't seen the gel based ones here. I'd probably still go with not feeding, but with juvenile fish they might be good.

I’ve used an auto feeder when I’ve been away for a couple of weeks. I set it to only feed once every 48 hours in order to ensure the water quality didn’t deteriorate too much. Done that twice and haven’t lost a fish while I’ve been away.
I only put as much as I know will be needed into the feeder just in case it decides to dump the lot into the tank (never happened, just being careful)
