right iv never heard of this so im gonna put it to u lot :)

my friend is thinkin of settin uyp his new tank and doin the fishless cycle....

here comes the best bit

he owns two horses.. and was thinkin instead of buying ammonia he was gonna put horse pee in the tank  as its pure ammonia....

hmmmmmmm what u all think????

personaly i think hes loopy :fun:

I hope the horse had good aim, hate to be the one holding the cup. It will probably work, my only concern, other than getting peed on trying to collect urine from a horse, would be adding some sort of bacteria to the tank along with the urine.

Urine is not pure ammonia

correct me if im wrong but all body waste be it from horse, fish, human or anythin else that produces waste is classefied as ammonia, and seeing as its got nothin else added to it, its pure.??? :dunno:

I don't think it would work - urine is not pure amonia - it contains other trace elements - eg sugar (diabetics) and many diseases are traced through urine testing.

yes but my point is, dont we use fish waste (near enough same as horse pee, with a few less things in it)to cycle our tanks?

then why not any pee?

i mean would fish waste produce the same kind of elements as horse wee?????

I see your point but why take the chance of introducing diseases into the tank before you even start.

Horse urine has many hormone conjugates in it. I used to work in a reproductive hormone lab, and we were a full on "pee lab". That's what we used to test for hormone level!

Also, aqueous animals (ie fish) release ammonia as their waste. Mammals produce urea, which is NOT the same thing, althoguh a similar compound.

You can safely tell your friend he's a moron.

yeah if i want a black eye or two id call him a moron...there are more ways to say no it isnt right than lowering myself to name calling. :grr:

he just thoguht it as a simple way to do it... dosnt mean he would have gone straight for it, as well how many ppl can say they got a horse to aim in a cup?

anyways... it got u all thinkin stop grummblin :fun:

Whatever. I was kidding. I really have to learn to stop doing that around here, seems like too many people are overly sensitive.

Have you ever thought it's you? I remember a post from you directed to me in a similar way.

Yes, I remember it too. However, in this case I was joking around, in your case, I was offended. You got all huffy when I corrected advice you gave. However, your information was incorrect. Perhaps when you get a little older you will understand that just because someone wants to disseminate the correct information does not mean that they are making a personal attack on you.

However, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize for my response to your reaction - it was snotty, and I should have held back.
