I'm looking at getting an external filter for my Rio 240 after my internal one kicked the bucket a couple of weeks back.

Have found an FX5 for sale 2nd hand near to me, is £90 a good deal or not really?

Seapets sell them new for £145,so being second hand for £90 i would opt for new.

Zooplus are selling eheim classic external 2217 for £76.90 at the moment, free P&P ,this can filter tanks upto 600L,or the 2215 for tanks up to 350l for £59.90 ,depends if you like eheim filters :)

Or an APS 2000EF for £75 with UV sterilizer (yet to order mine, having to watch the pennies once again around bills time).

Have no issues with Eheims :) I just thought second hand would be slightly easier on the pocket. Tbh I thought it was a bit steep, and would rather go for a 2217 like this one if it's suitable for my tank. We're about to be VERY in debt (buying a house!) so any saving is good!

Things might have changed, as its some time since I've looked at the hardware side of fishkeeping, but from what I rembmer the Tetratec EX1200 might suit your needs. Plus a quick search of prices on the internet shows they go for around £70 - £100 new.

Of course the cheapest filter is the DIY made trickle filter in my opinion (or even a sponge filter).

That seems a good buy :) - i'm always wary about buying filters/heaters etc second hand has not all peeps are honest when it comes to condition and working order...

Here is the cheapest I can find the 2217 brand new. And there's a discount for your first order and free shipping. Hmm, I wonder if I could get away with it, and then ask for the money back for my birthday in a month....?? :hey: :shifty:

Just rang my LFS - they sell them for £155!

Can I ask...what ARE UV Sterilisers?
Ultra Violet light kills many bacteria...

Back at school, I gave myself a nasty graze while playing hockey on astro-turf. Before we went abroad on holiday, this graze barely healed. We then went to Rhodes and the combination of both sunny weather (UV a+b mainly) plus the salty seawater made my wound heal very quickly.

In a fish tank, this will reduce the odds of your fish catching many common illnesses produced by bacteria ;)

Oh right thanks, so it's prob worth looking into.

Might help me a lot actually, cheers.
