Your nitrItes and ammonia should be 0 once the tank is cycled. It is the nitrAtes which will have a reading.
It really is best to have one school of the same fish so if you don't wan't a school of red eyes which get 3 inch? i think, pick your favourite tetra and trade in the red eyes for some of them. Once the tank is cycled of course. My favourites are rummy nose and cardinal but these both do better in a mature tank.

Yea, I'm not getting any more fish, until my tank has cycled. I was only thinking of new fish because my LFS said one week. They are obviously wrong though, so now I'm focusing on cycling the tank. So, I guess daily 15% water changs should help? I did one yesterday, and I'm doing another today.
