The last few times I saw these, they were kept in tropical water. I saw them at PetCo and a (not so great) lfs.

At PetCo, I didn't even ask (why bother?).

At the lfs, she said "tropical, they've been in there for monthes".

:dunno:

Please un-confuse me.

Coldwater.

Definatley, they may survive in tropical tanks but they will not be healthy and happy IMO.

They are mostly from fast flowing streams which are cool. They like very clean and highly oxygenated water and warmer water is not good for this because it holds less oxygen.

Thanks Cheese.

I'd love to get a few, but I have no intention of doing a goldfish tank, so they're out. :/

You've killed my hill-stream dream Cheese.

As said they can withstand tropical temperatures but are much more suited to fast flowing, well oxygenated coldwater as the majority of their wild habitats suggest.

Mine lives in my tropical tank. I bought him no knowing much about him (do not do that anymore!) and surprising does well in mine. Hangs out all the time at the bubble wall obviously then comes out when time to eat, loves bloodworms! Goes mental for them, real show stopper he is!

Loves bloodworms?

Are you sure he;s a hillstream loach? I think the majority (if not all) are algae eaters (micro organisms in algae).

Comet - Why not have just hillstream loaches in a tank? That's what I have :hey:

That's a good idea, maybe add some white cloud minnows.

My problem is space. The only space I have left in my small apartment is for a double decker 55g set-up. Those have been long spoken for.

Unless I do without a microwave oven....... :shifty:
