Hikari Pleco Wafers?

Anyone used these before? Amazon.com : Hikari Usa Inc AHK21328 tropical Algae Wafer 8.8-Ounce : Pet Food : Pet Supplies

I need to get my pleco some new wafers, as I have been feeding him blanched cucumbers and cory cat food. (only because he stealing it from them. )

I was going to get the Tetra Pro wafers, but I read some bad reviews on those... Hikari is a good brand, that's why they were my second choice - omega one doesn't make pleco wafers.

@Colin_T, you mentioned a while back that i can freeze fish food until I'm ready to use it? Do I just put the containers in the freezer? (I have 2 Fluval bug bites containers that I'm not going to need for a while)

I feed these to my amano shrimp and snails, but I am starting to like the Hikari Sinking Wafers better because they are smaller and less messy.

I definitely don't' want a mess... pleco does enough of that for me, lol.

I think I may stick with the pleco wafers, but I'm going to wait and see if anyone else has an opinion first. Thanks!

On a youtube video channel the tuber uses Repashy....but you have to prepare it..... to create a food block...I haven't tried yet...but on a side note if you go this router you are well on your way to being a fish nerd...lol.....

But if the containers of Bug bits are already sealed, they should be able to go straight in?

Omega One has veggie wafers for bottom dwellers. I use them for my cories and sometimes my plecos. I have used the Hikari brand quite a few times.

Hey PK! I've used Hikari wafers for a good while. A bristle nose I had during the time doubled in size, before being quietly ganked by a fish that acted like a serial killer when the lights went out. My current albino pleco usually eats bioslime and feeding leftovers. When he wants more he's trained me to shower him with Hikari shards when comes to the corner of my tank and stays there. By me that's a great recommendation for the product. ?

I have Marineland..and they sink to the bottom and that's the last I see of them. Nobody eating them I can see,its just in an aquarium with lots of structure those thin wafers get pushed under or in by the pumps.
They say high protein..but who knows? They for sure are fat free..they weigh almost nothing.
I think,you are better off with repashy of any kind. I make Beefheart blended with gelatin and mix in some Wardleys shrimp pellets...the Botia's and Garra's and Corys seem to like it. Rainbows pick at it.
In the past I tried more ingredients and it got to where the fish wouldn't touch it!..out went a pound of frozen fish food into the disposal.
They say paprika does wonders. Tetra uses it quite a bit for the red color. For Plecos?..I guess Zukes and Broccoli would be a great start- cooked,and add shrimp pellets? Or cooked shrimps.

Yes you can put new containers of food in the freezer if you like, but if they are sealed up airtight from the factory, they are usually fine to sit on a shelf away from heat and out of light, and they last a while like that.

Freezing is more for when you buy a big container of dry food and aren't going to use it all within a month. Then you divide it up into smaller batches, remove the air from the bags, seal them up and put them in a second and or third bag, and freeze them.

You want to try and use dry foods within 2 weeks of opening the container.

I have been using Hikari algae wafers for several years now to feed my 2 BN plecos in 2 different tanks. I generally feed one wafer every two days and drop it in late at night. They "smell" the wafer and are on it within minutes. For a juvenile Pleco , I would only drop in 1/2 wafer at a time (you can split it with your fingers.
The other fish in the tank try to get at the wafer, but the plecos quickly show them who's boss.

In between feedings, they graze on algae in the tank and possibly on flakes that make it to the substrate.

Speaking of home made...many recipes say add spirulina. In NO WAY,would I ever add a cyanobacteria to the fish food! I'm sure somebody will say its dead or it's not invasive..but after ridding my tank? My advice is why take the chance? Use Zucchini.
