Hello,

So I have read up on some of the old posts about HPS lighting. Most of them end up saying they might try it, but I have yet to see any feedback. Have any of you tried using it or heard of someone that has?

I'm planning on starting a 30 gallon cube reef tank. I have an older (3 years old) 250 watt High Pressure Sodium grow light used to grow...stuff. Any insight would be great.

Thanks

Sodium Light gives totally the wrong kind of light, I have tried it. I ended up buying a floodlight with a gear tray to come with a metal halide bulb, and ordered my marine metal halide bulb from LAMPSPECS website 14,000k

Yes, HPS lamps are the wrong color spectrum for reef aquaria. Their ballasts however are good for driving any halide of the same wattage and socket type, including aquarium lamps ;)

I have heard of using the ballast with metal halides. I'm just going to go ahead and do that, thanks for the help.

Not all HPS or SON ballast is interchangeable with Metal Halide, it should however tell you if its compatible on the ballast, just a warning before heading off and trying it only to find the ballast is inccorect.
