Hi there, I'm a amateur fish hobbyist, i've had a 46 gallon tank for a little over a year, I have 2 plecos in this tank, both of which are becoming too big for it (which makes me deeply saddened) I hate to give up my fish, but I feel it's best for them, and my original pleco, the highfin spotted pleco, is by far my favorite and the largest. I was planning on giving him away to a friend of mine who has a pond, and so i was curious, do highfin's hibernate? She was going to have koi in this pond, and said she'd gladly take my pleco. But I dont want to put him in a death trap, I want to make sure he'll be able to handle the changes in temperatures. And since I couldnt' find anything online I figured i'd ask her, any help is appreciated, thanks for taking the time to read.

He's a tropical fish and not suitable for a UK pond. If it was a tropical pond, that would be a different matter, but as you're asking about hibernation I assume it's a pond somewhere where it will get very cold in the winter.

Plus large koi will make short work of a plec if they decide to get boisterous.

yeah i'm sorry i should have put location, i leave in the US, and i live near the greatlakes, we have hot summers and cold winters, i was unaware large koi would go after it, someone told me they were herbivores

Whether or not the koi would get on with the Pleco is not the key point, as the Pleco would simply not survive a cold winter outside.

They are largely herbivorous but they are also large, powerful fish. They wouldn't try to eat the plec but they might bash it around a bit.

As hamfist said, a plec wouldn't survive cold weather. He needs a tropical tank.
