After my plec got too big to go under a piece of slate he called home I'm struggling to find anything suitABLE for him to hide under/in. What do other people use. He's a 10th inch sailfin which is quite fat lol.

id get some bogwood if you have the room and you might aswell get ride of the slate. :fish:

drainpipe
Yes plastic piping is a good idea as a cave for large plecs.
My huge 12+in L001 plec sleeps in a half circular piece of guttering pipe which has a sort of funnel tube on top and looks like a submarine. Other fish love to swim into the funnel and out the end. Plec doesn't seem to mind cichlids in his home while he is asleep.

are general plastic drainpipe/guttering definately safe?? ie chemicals and things?

yes just give it a good wash and maybe soak for a few hours. Got my guttering from B&Q and had it in the tank for a year now with no ill effect.. After all fake plants, waterchange siphons and many ornaments are made of plastic too.

my plan is for some guttering, aquarium sealant and some slate pieces like the type people use instaed of gravel in there garden. just dont want a piece of guttering in tank looking a bit out of place.

If you don't like the like the un-natural look of plastic drainpipe, you could silicone or tie cork bark over the pipe to give it a more natural look :good:
Then grow java moss on it to give an even better look!

That sounds like a great idea. Won't cork rot and decompose when it has been in water for a while?

I think the cork will be fine and adding the java moss or fern to it will make it look great.
another more natural effect is to silicone it and roll it in what ever you use as substrate.
I just built a huge cave out of drift wood my big guy will spend most of the day sitting on top
and only hides when startled but returns to the top in a short while
