Hi there. I am so happy to be a part of this forum. I have had tanks for years (10 and 29g currently). 10g is a betta tank with 2 corys and some minnows. 29g has 2 Jack Dempsey, 6 corys, a banjo catfish and a LOT of minnows. I recently purchased the small Jack Dempsey cichlids to try to keep the minnows in check. After reading more about the JD, I purchased a 120g tank yesterday. It will be in this week and I am looking forward to setting it up. I am leaning towards black sand substrate as I think that will show off the JD coloring more. It will be planted and have several hides and driftwood. The 29g fish won't be moving to the new tank until it is cycled. I will also not be adding the minnows. I just can't keep them from breeding. The new tank also has a sump. I am not familiar with sumps but have been really researching. I am leaning toward a filter sock and K1 and pot scrubbers for filtration. Is there anything else that I should look into for the sump? Also, what are some things you wished you had done upon set up of a new tank? I have never had a tank of this size or quality and don't want to mess this up. Thanks in advance for any advice!

Welcome to the forum. The new tank sounds exciting. There will be someone on the form who will be able to advise you about sumps.

Well guess what ? We’re happy that you’re happy to be a part of this forum , The Great TFF Forum . A 120 gallon aquarium for Jack Dempsey’s sounds great ! You just gotta breed them . That would be awesome to see a whole big aquarium full of them . Welcome to our merry little band of fish nerds .

Thank you! I’m not sure what I have. Could be two males as one is totally colorless. I’m hoping that once they have their own territories the other will color up. I want them to be happy in their own areas.
