Yep, your level/status is related to the number of posts you make, not necessarily how knowledgeable you are in the hobby.

I agree with cheese specialist. You can still be a big part of the board even if you are new. Nobody discredits your replys or posts just because your level is newbie.

The rank you have makes no difference. The only way you can prove your stuff is to help people out with their problems. Post often to get the rank up, but it doesn't mean anything and you should refrain from spamming.
