Hi I'm New To The Forums

yeah for us Gringos its usually 1lb per gallon of water :) makes things a bit easier lol

id suggest you do corals before anemones as well, jmo though. youll get the bug, everyone gets the bug,you cant stop it so join it :D

Ahhh...I know this can be such an expensive hobby. At the same time it is extremely addicting. You never answered what do you recommend for lighting. I want something that promotes the growth of organisms on the LR.

You can go for T5s, Arcadia or metal halides. Does your tank have a bulit in hood where the bulb you have is sitting?

Well to answer that question in the best possible way I need to know your plans? Simple t8s will give you enough light to grow some soft corals but t5 would give you more options, you could keep some LPS and a bubble tip anemone (however, word of caution here, Nems can only be kept in mature tanks of at least 7/8 months)

Oh and by the way, the coraline is not caused by light, it is calcium based. So any tank with lighting of t8 level etc with good levels of calcium and magnesium and a light source will have coraline :good:

well, I will wait on an any anemones till the tank is mature. Plus after lighting, live rock, and the proper amount of sand I'll have to wait for more money anyway. Eventually I'll want to go for more than just softies, but that will be a long time so should i go T5 right away or T8.

aggree with the coraline bit 100% ive got a t8 and im getting coraline, it looks nice

and if your getting lights definatley go at least with t5s :good:

T5's it is. I am making a list of all this in a microsoft word document lol. What is up with blowers or fans. I've read that tanks need current and up till now ive only had filters running. I know im asking a lot of questions but i wanna learn as much as I can and do things right.

In a way there are two questions there:

The live rock needs flow which is caused by powerheads - many of us use the Koralia make :good: for softies you need at least x 20 flow in your tank but more is better.

So, if you go for x 25 you need two koralias, one either end of approx: 2700 litres an hour

The fans bit, in Summer the temp in the tank can really get very high, so many of us have fans that blow across the top of the tank. I have a large ceiling fan which stays on all day and night which helps keep the temp down.

Its good to ask questions :) As Seffie says 'a bad question is a question not asked'

I'm not that experienced but from what I have read. You need a lot of flow around your rock to feed the bacteria in the rock but also any corals. Without flow 'dead spots' will be created where harmful nitrate will build up.

I'm not completely sure so I would get someone who has more experinece than me :)

ok... love this website...had no idea bout the current and why is was needed. What type of LR would be decent. A store nearby has stuff called Caribbean and African.

imalso not that experienced but i thought deadspots let Cyano in  which is caused by nitrates/phosphates so guess we can both be right :D

which reminds me i need another powerhead

ok for LR i dont think it really matters unless you want to go green then there are some alternative like tank break downs and specialized not LR,but its still LR

the only thing i could guess matters would be what sort of beasties crawl out

There are many different types of rock available, you are looking for light, porus rock with a lot of surface area and an interesting shape. Ensure it is fully cured and transport in water for less die off :good:

ps glad you like the forum

Thank you for all the input. I will definitely put it to use. I'm sure I'll end up having a ton more questions in the future.
