I recently took ownership of a fish tank. I'm fairly confident that I need to change a few things about it. I want to do the best job I can so I thought getting some ideas from a tropical fish community is the way to do it!

Thats the perfect way to do it. Theres so much help here plus a chat function were we are all friendly.

Anything in particular you think you need to change?

Adam, tell us a bit more about yourself and your fish keeping experience/plans for fishkeeping?

Check out the Beginners Resource Section as this is a great place to start.

Fire away with your questions and you will get a lot of help from the members here.

Welcome Adam!

Like mentioned above, let us know what you've got setup and anything else you might need help with.  Most of us don't bite!

to TFF, Adam. Tell us all about your tank preferably with pictures and your location (where in the world - not address! lol), your concerns and we'll help all we can.

Welcome Adam everyone here are great people and helped me alot , make sure to check out the beginner resource centre posted above its full of awesome info, the most important being the cycling process :)

Fabulous shot of your betta in your signature, Jade! Sorry, Adam, not on topic but had to comment!

Hi all. Thanks for the warm welcome :)

After a few hours research yesterday, I managed to identify all the fish. I have a 56 litre tank containing:

1 Black Ghost Knife fish.
1 Glass Catfish.
1 Corydoras Aeneus.
2 Neritina Natalensis
1 Synadontis Angelica

The water temperature is 26 Degrees (78.8 F).

I understand that the tank is too small for the fish. I hope to get a larger tank soon, but for the moment this will have to do. I don't really want to give any of them away, but I feel I may have to.

I got an API master testing kit this week. I'm happy with the test results but I'd like to work out the optimum temperature and pH levels. Your help would be appreciated :)

I'll snap a photo of the tank soon. I have 2 large caves for the fish to hide in - I read this is the best thing to do with catfish. I also have a live plant thats seems to be thriving, I keep having to cut it back!.

That's a good start, a lot of new fishkeepers don't realise that what's in their tank is totally unsuitable.

I suspect you will have to give away the BGKF - they get up to 30-40 cm, so they require a very very big tank. They Syno needs something around 200l, so you may be able keep hold of that if you've got the room for that kind of sized tank.

The Glass Catfish really ought to be in a shoal of at least 6, as do the bronze cories.

What I'd suggest you do, when you're in a position to get the bigger tank, is to let us know what size you're getting, and what you've currently got, and we work out what's good and what's not, and recommend other things that could work around what you've got.

Could you post the results from your tests, please, Adam?

While you're thinking about getting a bigger tank/rehoming some fish, do make sure you keep up the water changes in your small tank. Bigger and more frequent water changes are very important in overstocked tanks

Hi again,

I'll dig out the results and post them here. As I said, it all seemed to be within acceptable levels.

I sent the last post from my phone, so here is the tank.

I added another thermometer today which has an audible alarm if the temp goes below 24 or above 28. Would you say this range is ok?

Thanks.
