Hi All,

I would Just like to introduce myself as I am new to this site, but not new to fish keeping, as my username suggests I’m an old git who’s returning to tropicals after a break of around 20 years. Our tank is a Jewel Rio 125 which we intend to keep as a community tank. It’s been set up for around 3 months now and is home, at the moment, to mostly the old favourites, Neons, Harlequins, Guppies and 3 Bristle Nose. I intend to keep to peaceful species and will add more fish as the tank matures.

I first became interested in keeping fish as early as the late 1940s early 50’s,........ I told you I was old!....... Anyway, I don’t suppose any of you remember the rag & bone man coming round by horse & cart offering Goldfish in exchange for old clothes etc. The fish were supplied in small round glass bowels, plastic bags were not yet invented, they were invariably dead the next day! Can you imagine that practice being allowed to happen today? One or two goldfish were later kept in larger bowels which were cleaned under the tap, refilled with tap water, no chemicals, and then the fish were returned to their home, some surprisingly lived for many years. I don’t think aquarium filters were invented to the early 60’s, if they were I don’t remember them being widely available. It was the late 60’s when we first started keeping tropicals.

I’ve also kept a wide range of cold-water fish in various ponds over the years. Our current pond is home to 17 Koi of various sizes, they help to keep me busy, especially during the warmer months.

I look forward to following the forum with interest.

Hi there,
Welcome to TFF... :hi:
We always welcome seasoned aquarists for they've earned their stripes. And we probably can learn a lot more of you as well...
The story about goldfish in a bowl is something I do remember as well from mainly the 1970's. Although, it's not advisable anymore to keep them in a bowl, I do have to admit that they lasted very long in a bowl looking back to the 1970's and 1980's.

Thanks for the welcomes,

It's good to know that help is out there, if & when it's needed.
