What would you guys say would be a good tank size and depth to start out marine ifish with?

In UK if possbile otherwise US :D

IMO, length is the most important consideration.
IF you start out with a tank at least three feet long, you will have greater options and flexibility.

I am going for a 6 footer as I have seen a tank which is a steal I think 6ft x 2ft x 2ft tank in 10mm glass is £307. Cant pass that up :D

Should be able to fit some nice fish in there!!

That sounds great!

Just be carefull to make sure the floor is strong enough for that size tank, you'll probably have to strengthen it somehow

It will be downstairs, should be ok do you think?

Maybe a trip to IKEA to buy a nice strong base/cab to put it on top?!

Oh, I love ikea!
but........I havn't seen anything there, or in their catalog, that I would even dare put a 20G on!

Unless it's slab foundation, I'd still check it. If you have a crawlspace foundation with standard floor joists.... it would probably do well to reinforce it.

I was talkign about the actual joists rather than a base ontop on the joists.

It depends which way they run, if they run the same direction as the length of teh tank then that isnt great, you would only have 1 or 2 wooden joists holden up 3/4 of a ton.

If they run perpendicular to the length of your tank then you should be fine, a 6 foto tank will have proabbly 5 or 6 joists.
