American in Munich Germany
Hello I was looking for a forum I could go to to ask question about my fish. I am an American living in germany. My father had many aquariums when I was little. He kept mainly guppies, red-tail sharks sword tails black mollies a catfish and algea eater. All I know is from watching him and that is it.

Later I had an aquarium in which I had guppies neons a red tail shark for the duration of one night because the pet store didnt tell me that the Beta I had saw and fell in love with would kill everything in the tank. It commited sucided 3 months later : I found it when I came home from where it had jumped out of the aquarium. So that has been my experience with fish until a week ago. I am in another hobby I raise and care for Tarantualas. I have 3 so far and will soon be getting my 4th. The giga I am getting is a fisher so I had its terra built so it would have its own fishing pond its small 8 inches in height 14-16 inches wide and 18-20 inches long

Now this was set up with aquarium rocks and plastic plants a small breather and for only 3 guppies as they wouldnt be in there long :))

After seein that guppies here are much more exspensive than I remember them being I and my husband thought we would get a small tank for breeding my Ts fish food. (though we were also talking how nice the sound of the bubbles in the water was) Aquariums are so relaxing and when we went we found that the pet store had on sell an aquarium started set on sell we bought one

the tanks is 60x40x30 (in cm)
so we bought it and for startes to go with it we got the guppys

3 angel fish 2 algea eater, 1 red tail and 10 neons

well one of the angels died before we got home but the others settle in just fine
this was last saturday we went then on monday to get a pair (male female) black molly and a pair of sword fish and another angel to replace the angel that died

we got 2 molles one fat female and one male and one male and female sword tail
we got another redtail shark, a white pinkish catfish but instead of another angel we got what is called here a Bolivian buntbarsch (I think in english its a Boliv Ram) - Microgeophagus altispinosa, which is pretty we also saw these 2 in the same tank-- blue with pink stripes
they were beautiful I though maybe they were a male/female pair and got them both
First thing that one did is grab one neon by the tail and about swalloed it whole
they also kept fighting one another we spoke with the pet store and learned they were both male
I told my husband I was concerned they would kill one another
literally chasing one another and hitting each other the way dolphin does a shark
they already killed 1 guppy, my male swordtail, and 7 neons (today we cleaned the tank and found some of them half eaten)

these 2 we call tweedle dum tweedle dee and today we seperated them putting each of them in thier own 30cm x20cm x20 cm tanks alone
they are called Macropodus opercularis (Paradise Fish)

we also replace the male sword tail and some neons in my larger aquarium and a male and female Buntbarsch but these are Blue Rams (Apistogramma ramirezi)
I also as I said earlier had to clean the tank after a week
my dad never had to clean his tank after a week and this tank looked the way a tank would look after several months
it smelled as well.. I think its the food I think we are putting to much in.. but we also needed to treat the water

My dad always did but in the US we had city (bleach oh my) water
here in Munich its against the law for them to put stuff in the water
its clean and pure and suppose to be the best water around germany even Europe

but its HEAVY in calc (sp?) and I think this is why the smell so we re-did the tanks and treated the water

the pet store had originally told us it wasnt nessary as this water is suppose to be fine but the tank had calc residue and now that we have treated it we notice that some of the fish (mainly my Angel Fish) seem to be swiming more but mainly they all have there colors back.

I dont know which one had babies (the guppy or the molly) but after all but the very bottom of the water I noticed ina cornor a wriggle thing )like mosquito larva) I looked and it was a baby fish
I found 3 babies after a week LOL and dont know how many got poured down the sink.:(
I think they are the mollies as the pet store keeps thier guppy males and females in seperate tanks
but the mollies were together and a week I think is awfully fast to have guppys (or is it?)

anyhow hints and info you can give me is greatful

Welcome to TFF, November Rain! (nice name, BTW!)

You'll probably have the most response to your questions if you post in the beginner questions section. The members are really helpful and knowledgeable. Wow, I can't believe you have tarantulas! I'm glad I'm safely tucked away in Canada far far away from your tarantulas! Have fun at TFF!!

:hi:

Thanks for the welcome
yes I have Ts and they like fish are for looking not handling LOL

I have read and it seems in some ways the 2 hobbys are similar and in many ways different

like Quarinteen (sp?) I know for my Ts this is a must but never thought it important with fish

things that are different is I have noticed that many on the forums use the common name when dealing with Ts we always use the latin name
for me living in another country any animal, fish, plant or other is going to sometimes have a different common name than that in english
but the latin name never changes

not that it matters lol I know only a small amount about fish but I am reading and learning
anyhow thanks all for the welcome
