i need to no which is better
i need to no if i should just get live rock
and no sand is this a good idea?

I can understand the need for bare bottom in an SPS tank, with there higher flow, but even then you can add it too a sump. Id stick with substrate in a run-of the mill reef display.

an inch or so of sand will most likely do you well

Agreed, and an inch or so of aragonite sand, dont waste money on "live sand"
