Oh, you KNOW you want to! Tell them he's not getting sold, or he's sick and needs home health..or he's dying, and ask if you can take him home and let him spend the rest of his days in a nice 5 Gallon

Tell your boss that he's sick, soooo very sick that he's on his last fins and you need to take him home to nurse him back to health. Then say he that he died overnight, Boom he's yours and nobody's the wiser!
Then be sweet and offer to replace him. (Sorry I just had to add fuel to the fire

Sprinkle a little sand over him, before anyone notices it falling off shout 'oh no, he has ich!' and run off with him. Oh darn, the little guy didn't make it. So I thought I'd better replace him with this lovely red VT

Hmm, seems betta freaks will do anything for a fish.... I'm also assuming the reason you are "agonizing" over what to do is because you like your work and your boss and don't want to cheat them...
'cause I was kind of thinking that you should set up your home tank for him, make sure that's all perfect, then one night just bag him and leave the vase-plant thing at the shop. Take the fish to his new loving home. Then the next time to go in to work, make a stink about the fish must have jumped out (he was jumping for food, he could have jumped out), did anyone see a dead fish? etc. And being the nice person you are, you volunteer to go and buy another betta (of lesser quality and beauty of course) to put in the now-abandoned vase thing. But if you insist on being honest, maybe they'll sell you the fish for less if you don't take the vase & plant (set up a better tank for him at home). They wouldn't have to lose any profit if they just had to replace the fish in the vase rather than the whole set up (I'm no advocate for fish-in-vase but with a lot of care, bettas can live long and full lives in a good size vase).

Personal philosophy about honesty aside, it's definately not smart to lie at one's workplace. With that much in mind, I'm not hot for the idea of lying to my employer, especially since my workplace is staffed by all of 3 people, thus making me transparently dishonest, and therefor stupid.
My reason for waffling on purchasing him is twofold: First, he's expensive, even despite an employee discount. Second, I sometimes fear my attention span isn't big enough to keep multiple tanks happy. I've found that if I have more than 2 bettas at one time, I start to lose my ability to care for them. All joy gets sucked out of tending them, I stop looking at them. I begin skipping feedings and water changes. I'm quite a responsible fish owner, but once under stress, I find that I have a tendancy to cut ties and run.
However, that said, I think I can handle one more betta these days, but only because I keep my other two in a 20g and a 5g. My other guy will probably go in my 5.3g on my desk....
Heh, I just called him my other guy.

No camera. 
My camera is broken atm. I might be able to convice my flatmate to lend me his camera later today. If he plays ball, I'll definately do so.
He's in a 3.3 US Gallon Bowl [Small Pals Pen X-Large; Living World; Hagen; 16" x 9" x 11"], because I didn't have my 5g ready, but my 3.3g was full of aged water all set to go. In a couple days, I'll move him to my 5.3g.
He's loving the long space in the 3.3g. I happen to have3 a whole bunch of silk plants handy and I put them in, and he's swimming about OOoing and Aaahing. He's also getting some stress coat and ial, so today's like a day at the spa for him.

And we all sigh in relief. Fish is happy, soritan is happy. Shall we all say it together? "And they lived happily ever after."
He's awesome. I thought briefly, for an insane 15 seconds, of naming him Awesomeo 2000. He's been too preoccupied swimming around his tank to pay much attention to me. His old vase is extra tiny compared to this 3.3. He'll probably settle down in a day or so, and then freak out all over again once he's moved into his perm-home, the 5.3.
