I had to strip my brackish tank down today in the hunt for a missing puffer fish (which it turns out has been eaten by the toad fish  ) and it gave me this wonderfull oppertunity to photograph one of my rarest and most reclusive fish.

Until this year these have never been available for import except for by accident in shipments of Gymnothorax tile and this happened once in a blue moon.

So i introduce the "freshwater" leopard moray Gymnothorax polyuranodon.

nice!

your having fun with the new camera aren't you! :D

oh hes beautiful, gorgeous marking.how big will he get?

Fishbase says round about 3 foot so im guessing anywhere in between 2 and 3 feet in captivity, virtually no one has kept them so there is no information available.

nice!

Too right, at last i can actually show off the fish i have rather than just say i have them, im sure some people think im making it up with half the fish i own/have owned.

very nice,beautiful markings
i love moray eels(we have one in stock atm and its tempting me) its something about their faces and eyes, they are so primitive looking
zebra moray eels are very nice too

I have never doubted the words of CFC. Actually there was one time which i have.
CFC: better not kill this one! Nice eel!

Are they rare in the wild, or in the hobby?

I presume they are not hugely common in the wild otherwise they would be in the trade more but i dont think they are actually rare, just not as common as G.tile. In the hobby they are like gold dust, when i got this one it was the first time they have ever been intentionally imported into England though i expect they will start to show up more over the next few years.

How much did that set you back? i have to say that is the nicest fish i have seen in a long time.

Not too much actually, i think i paid £50 for it with my TFF discount card (thats Tropical Fish Finder not Tropical fish forums before everyone starts asking for a card ) which i thought was very reasonable
