After some good decisions, we decided to just keep one rock in and keep multicoloured gravel and a few plants...looks more natural now but also gets my little sisters interest:

Another thing, we orderd the light bulb as the other ran out and it came but it is faulty...lights up fully, then goes duller...is this the bulb or the tank? the tank is about 3 years old now...shouldnt be a problem should there? the bulb is a fish r fun lamp:

also i have done my reserch like a good girl  and i have found that 2 people have had the same problem due to the TANK? its a hexagon tank as seen below. any help is much appreciated.

I have this exact same tank containing a betta. The problem may be the lamp, but also check the large plug. The plug died on mine and I almost wasn't able to get another as my LFS stopped selling the tanks due to peope having this problem. Get the plug tested in an electrical shop to make sure it is working properly ( you may have to take the entire lid with you, the small pump that runs the filter does detach though ) If it is faulty, you will need to either check to see if your lfs still stocks them, or order one online. I simply got lucky as the guy in my lfs just happened to have one under the desk right at the back. We tested it, it worked, and I got it for £5. But I am already searching for another just in case it happens again.

The bulb on my tank also went last week. But you don't have to specifically order a Fish R Fun brand lamp, just take the old one to an electrical store and you can buy one from there. It's basically just a little striplight. All you need to get is one the same length and wattage as the old one. Mine cost about £3 and works perfectly.

Also, I hate to tell you this, but that tank is only around 5 gallons and you need at least 40-55 bare minimum for those two goldfish. By which I mean a tank around 3- 4 feet long, a five foot tank would be even better.

Fancy goldfish get as big as a tennis ball/orange when kept correctly, and normal goldfish grow to at least 10 inches in length, usually they end up bigger at around 12-14 inches long. If you keep those two goldfish in that tank you will kill them eventually.

They have a lifespan of around 30 years when kept correctly, but keeping them in a tank that is too small will stunt their growth and shorten their lifespan. The bones stop growing, but the internal organs do not, and will keep growing until they can't go any more. The swimbladder is often a casualty of this, as it becomes squashed and cannot inflate and deflate properly to keep the fish level in the water. Swim bladder disease is very common in stunted fish.

If you have had those fish in there for 3 years there's is a high chance they are already stunted. But it has been known for fish to put on a growth spurt when moved to larger tanks after being kept for years in small ones. So there is hope for them if you can get a bigger tank.

Also, Goldfish are very messy. They eat a lot and crap a lot. They produce a hellish amount of waste and require good filtration. The small tray filter in the back of that tank is absolutely useless for goldfish. It doesn't hold anywhere near enough media to support even one goldfish let alone two. I keep a betta in mine and I have to do 50% water changes weekly to keep his tank stable and healthy, and he's one of VERY few species that tank can safely cater for. You seriously need a much larger tank with an external filter to cater for a pair of goldfish, plus larger weekly water changes and gravel/substrate vacs.

The only thing that tank is suitable for is for EITHER a single betta, 3-4 male guppies or Endlers, snails or shrimp.

Obviously you don't have to take this advice, they are your fish after all, but they will never grow to their natural and correct adult size and live to their full lifespans in that tank if you continue to keep them in there.
