I am looking for a Betta imbellis, a golden double tail (this one in the pic has a dorsal fin as large as the anal fin!), and a butterfly cambodian comb tail betta (all males) I have a book, and they are so gorgeous! When I go to my lfs, all I see are little cramped bettas with decent but not great color, and alot of them just don't look good. Where can I find these fish? I am not really pro-shipping animals. Also, if I do find them, how much am I looking to pay?

I'm sorry to say that you may not be able to find those fish if you are not willing to have them shipped to you. Pet stores don't usually carry such high quality bettas. The only other thing I could thing of is to find a local chapter of the IBC near you, and to contact some breeders.

Also wanted to mention, doubletails have a "double" dorsal fin too - it has twice as many rays as a single tail, and that is why it is so large. They're all like that.

Don't expect to find bettas that look like those in your book - those are the cream of the crop, and very expensive! A very good breeding pair of crowntails could go for $50-100, depending on their color, finnage, etc. Great bettas unfortunately are not cheap!

Hope you find what you want.

I saw them at a pet store ONCE....I had no idea at the time what they were nor did the staff when i asked them. I was miles away from home and worried about it making the trip. They were in a mountain town called Kamloops in British Columbia a long way from home for me. I guess there is nothing that could be done about that one. Good luck finding one... but it is a little rare to find one at the petstore...although it can be done. I say call around to everyone around you and maybe you will luck out. But honestly you will be lucky if they even know what it is.

Sumer Kay,

What part of Cali are you in?? I know of a few places that carry Crowntails, if you wanna settle for that :dunno: . The places that carry Crowntails might even special order something for you if you asked :dunno: .

I have a cambodian combtail I found at petco.
I once saw a butterfly cambodian veiltail at the lfs but it wasn't for sale.

I was lucky once and got a halfmoon (Red Banner-II) at a PETCO. I guess they left him because his tail wasn't long and flowing but more like short and broom-like.

You might get lucky, too. Just keep on checking every petstore you are able to go to within your area.

stockton/sac area I guess, I don't need ones so fancy, just not too excited about ur run o the mill petco bettas. I HATE those lil cups! (and they always look like they have fin rot with short stubby tails and fins) :( oh well
thanks all

Hey Sumer Kay,

I live in Southern Cali, but I still have some info for you. I got this off a California Fish Directory. It sounds good. When I got up north to vist my Fam in a few months, I will go and check it out myself. If you do check it out keep me posted. I think Davis is like an hour to you I dunno, but here you go.

Store name:
Ace Hardware- Garden And Pet
(Davis Lumber & Hardware)
Address:
815 3rd St
Davis, California, 95616
Telephone:
1-530-758-8000
Comments: I EDITED THE INFO causes its alot I only left in the good stuff. Doug, who is there Tues-Sat. He knows EVERYTHING about fish. He will do all he can for you to get a specific fish, I believe that he might even order a fish for you, and not charge you for the order, but I'm not sure about that. He carries the common fish, like danios, bettas (female and male), spiketail paradise fish, roundtail bettas,
