Here are some of my first picks for fish, will they get along?

Pseudotropheus saulosi
Neolamprologus tretocephalus
Labidochromis sp
Tropheus duboisi
Redtail shark
Melanochromis johanni
Aulonocara hueseri

this is just a start,

125Gal tank.

I may have to get water from tap vs my soft water system water.....?

Any problems I should be made aware of also?

what the hell....... translation please

You picked mostly African driftlake species (both Lake Tang and Malawi). Red-tail shark probably doesn't belong in that tank.

What is your pH and hardness of water? All of the above except for the shark thrives in high pH environment, so if your water is soft, you will need to add some chemicals or special substrates.

Tropheus duboisi probably doesn't belong in that list either - not a good species to begin this hobby.

Aulonocara is a relatively peaceful, slow moving species. They usually don't go well with mbunas. Both Pseudotropheus saulosi and especially Melanochromis johanni will probably drive Aulonocara nuts.

What's important to you, the visual flashless or their interesting behaviors?

It is so hard and I see where tank 2 will come in to play some day.

My water is soft, real soft if I use R/O or I can cut it off and use the hard city water. So, should I use the soft water and add things to make it hard or should I use city water and add things to kill the stuff the city puts in the water?

I might beable to have the water run through the purifier and have it so it still is hard and still clean up the junk.... humm That may take some work

I like a little of everything.... -_-

The Yellow Lab looks really cool, I like the bright colors of a lot of fish.

Personality is great as well. I don't want Royal Rumble 4 in my aquarium as chewed up fish never look good but I lean more toward the fighters I guess but Peacocks "some look great" IMO

Also I don't need a thousand fish in my aquarium to be happy. 125gals I would hope to have around 15-25 depending on size of some.

red-finned-borleyi are pretty

Do you know as a fact that your city adds bad chemicals? If you are talking about chlorine or chloramine, you can get additives to get rid of those, but are you referring to other chemicals as well?

When you say "hard", what is the pH? Try collecting water from the tap, leave it outside for 24 hours, then measure pH, KH and GH. If pH turns out to be around 8.0 or higher, you have a water from heaven for african cichlids... :D
