If you see flecks and spots of gold or white that are a bit raised from the scales, then you have a problem. However, if you don't see those monitor the beta for redness around the gills or anal fins (belly), check the water chemistry (get some test strips or bring the water to your local fish shop), and check the temperature. Many beta's can actually change their color to blend in better. This is more common in females and since you didn't state the gender of your beta it's hard to say.
