ok bit confused all my fish are acting weird. My Zebra danios are just laying on the sand. and Bronze corys keep bombing to top and back down.Also i have had a few snails at the bottom of the tank recently now there all at the top only small ones. Some of the danios look like they are dying but when i move them they move.

I have tested all water and they are fine temp is set to 80

in the tank i have 1 angel fish
2 bristle nose
1 ruby shark
8 bronz corrys
5 danios

I done a 40 percent water change today and its only recently last hour or 2 i noticed this change its a 140 litre tank

How much water surface agitation have you got in the tank? 80F is awfully high for the Zebra Danios and Bronze Corydoras, who would both do better at 67-70F, which will consequently hold less oxygen and could explain the catfish gulping air more regularly. Only other things that jumps to mind are was the new water reasonably temp matched and could the fresh water be wildly different in pH from that which was in the tank?

I second that. Darting to the surface is typical cory behaviour though. BUT 80[sup]o[/sup] is FAR TOO HIGH. You want to aim for about 73[sup]o[/sup] for a regular community aquarium although as stated above, the Danio's can take lower. I don't necessarily agree that Cory's come from much colder temp water, as some of them come from rivers that are normally quite warm, however, when there is a big rainfall the temp drops quite a lot so they are capable of handling lower. In fact its the sudden drop, coupled with change in water column height that often stimulates spawning in Cory's.

Aim your filter output so as to agitate the surface of the water (it only needs to ripple really, not fountain out, lol) OR maybe put an airstone or bubble wall in ? Good luck

Cheers for the help i have just turned it down to 77 didn't want to shock them 2 much.
Ive got an air stone in there going now.
the water going in was about 2-3 degrees out.
See what happens in the morning cheers guys

Well the fish are going back to normal except 1 dead angel fish 1 dead ruby shark and 1 bronze cory

Unless their are/were more symptoms you did not write about last night, my personal hunch is that there was something bad in the new water last night, perhaps extra chemicals added by the water company, or something contaminated your water changing equipment. In your situation I would do another big water change now and go bonkers on the dechlorinator (I would use the maximum 5x standard dose of my Seachem Prime), adding water of a similar temp but then turn down the heater thermostat to 21C/70F and let the water naturally drop in temperature.

In addition, are you able to reposition the filter output for more surface movement, or add a small powerhead for more rippling?

Cheers im gona wash all my water changing kit with hot water then do a 50 percent water change the temp is at 75 right now and i just lost another bronze cory

So sorry for these losses. It's especially bad when you're fairly experienced and something like this happens with no apparent reason. I do hope the worst is over.

just double checking...you are dechlorinating aren't you? with Temp matched (warmish) water? How are you refilling? Hose/bucket/jug?

Yeah same temp water from a bucket heated by a heater as dont trust my boiler and its dechlorinated water. I spread the water evenly

Thanks for the help guys done the water change and extra tap safe. Fish are back to normal Thankfully. Still a loss saddely.

I think the problem was caused by my hot water boiler. I filed up 2 glasses one from hot and 1 from cold tap hot tap is slightly cloudy. So ill go back to my old ways of heating up water with a heater

if your boiler is a combination boiler the hot water will be cloudy at first but if you let it stand for a minute or two it will clear. It's something to do with the fine bubbles in the hot pipes or something. It's not dangerous to us but it could be a problem to fish ... there might be someone more knowledgable about gas and boilers on here somewhere.

If you are worried about hot water from the tap try boiling some in the kettle. It's what I do and it's never caused a problem

YEah it is a combi. Cheers for the info its always something thats bothered me in my old house.

Im just gona use cold water from now on and use a heater to get temp up .

I always boil a kettle when doing water changes.
I know people say hot water from a combo boiler is ok, I wouldn't want to drink it so wouldn't chance it for my fish
