Please help temp has gone through the roof no change to heater for months and always been ok!!

Also fish swimming near the top seem to be gasping I have clean all filters and done slight water change!??

Hi

I can see you are in the UK so the water temperature rise cannot be due to an outside heatwave! The answer is probably a malfunction of the heaters thermostat.
I would take the heater out immediately and replace it. You could try turning the temperature knob from max to min a couple of times then return it to the correct temperature to see if it unsticks it but, to me, the relatively cheap cost of a new heater over loosing stock is a 'no brainer'

Thanks for your help i will try that with heater now! What about the fish gasping and swimming high in the tank??

How is your air supply what airstone/pump do you use and how big is the tank? what fish are they and whats your current temp?

Temp is high 30+ due to fault with the heater. i am going to change a little water and use colder water to bring temp down.

Fish:
2 Golden Barbs
1 albino catfish
3 neons
2 blind cave tetra
1 britlenose

70 litre tank its a jewul using the pump that comes with it!

the fish are gasping becasue warmer water holds less oxygen then cooler water. once you get the temp sorted they should return to normal. increase aeration in the meantime by either adding an airstone or removing a bit of the water so the filter makes more of a "splash" as the water returns to the tank.
i would most likely look into getting a new heater.
cheers

Definately get a new heater. Lower your water level to increase airation from the filter. Do several smaller water changes using slightly cooler water (1-2 degrees cooler than the tank) to SLOWLEY bring the water temp down. You may have to to 3 or 4 (maybe more) smaller water changes (Max 25% at a time) to bring the temp down. But get a new heater ASAP, in my experience, even if you can get the thermostat to "un stick" it is just a matter of time before it malfunctions again.
