We bought a 2nd hand Ehiem Kristall (bloody octagon) from a friend (who is now in the Middle East), and filled it up, treated it, sorted it out (took 3 weeks) and basically the seals perrished and it was leaking everywhere. We emptied it and dried it and sealed it...OK so 3 weeks later...it leaks again from another point...now it's in the bin. Lesson learned...don't buy 2nd hand tanks.
So now we have a vision 180 (in box in middle of room), so we are starting again, but we bought an Ehiem proII which has cost some money! This is how we have mannaged to spend so much money.
I spent so much time on the Kristall that I have lost some enthuasim for our new tank, but everytime I look at the kind of fish I want I get some back.
Anyway (talking rubbish), can anyone help me out with exactly what I need to put in the tabnk to be able to run it well! I have UV filter...that's it!
D :X :( :/ :-( -_-

Anyway you can return the eheim pro II? canister filters aren't the best things in the marine world, the best filtration money can buy is LR. what kind of livestock do you plan on keeping?

damsels, tang(s)?, clownfish, i'd like a butterfly fish and i'd love a moorish idol!
The tank is only 180litres so I don't think i'll be able to have the bigger fish.

moorish idol's > are had for some to keep give it a cople of years in the hobby then give it a try.

In a 180 "Tang(s)" might not be the way to go. What are the dimentions of the tank? Tangs need alot of swimming space to feel 'happy' cramping them will depressed them (ie illness then death) of fighting (ie death) eather way to a good idea.

clownfish> yes

butterfly fish> coral nippers! what corals you hoping for?

It's a juwel 180Vision, i'm not sure on the dimension (it's long). I wasn't planning on putting coral in there, got shed loads of living rock but i'm going to stick with artificial everything else.
What do you think would be the best fish to start with?

if you like clowns, they're one of the best starter fish IMO

I had been advised not to keep live coral and other inverts because of the type of fish I want (trigger especially), but after some thought I want some soft coral on my live rock as it looks great. Not ready for anything yet though as my water is doing it's stuff!

No they don't eat it, but aparantly they will break it off (i'm only going on what i've been told here), they sharpen their teeth on it. Anyway I have been advised that they wont touch the soft coral (which I'm going to get).

Help!

Help!

mushrooms and leather coral are two that are easy to keep and not to demanding of lots of light, if it's a bright morning mine open up before the tank lights come on.

If you do go with mushrooms put them in an area of the tank with not much flow cause then they get heowge!

On the canister they are great things to run alongside your life rock, but you need to use them in a differant way to you would in FW. Most people on here will use them to run either phosphate remover, nitrate sponge or activated carbon. I'm greedy and have all three in mine :p some people just use them for extra flow and some people break up live rock to put in there. In any case just a make sure you tank the FW sponges out of there.

Another use for the canister is as a 'remote deep sandbed' - that is an area of sand that is seperate from you main tank, using them in this way is dependent on where the hoses connect (they need to both be at the top) and how powerful your filter is (you'd choose a lower powered model) the idea is that on the top layer is the only sand that is disturbed so anerobic bacteria can grow there. These are they type that will help to keep your nitrates at 0. I'm thinking about having a go at one as I've ended up with a second hand fluval 205 given me with a tank I bought.

Your primary use for one is def phospate remover and activated carbon.

hope this helps yo a bit!

:D
