I'm guessing you're talking about a male platy?

The main reason a male platy would pester the females is to mate. Now the females are squabbling for territory, and i think the best way to distract them, is to add another male.

EDIT - Ok, just noticed where the post is. I don't know much about bettas, yet. But i would just give them plenty of places to hide, so if one get's pestered, it can hide somewhere.

Yes, it's normal for a male betta to attack any fish that has bright colors, and sometimes even dull-colored ones. Bettas aren't social fish and prefer to be kept on their own.

It's possible to keep female bettas together, but you need to have at least 4 females to even out the aggression. The tank also needs to be big enough... at -least- 10 gallons (for 4-6 bettas), and with lots and lots of hiding places. You should separate your two females, and either keep them that way, or just until you can get at least another two, providing your tank is big enough.
