I have a golden pristella (x-ray) tetra that seems to be a little sick. The bottom right side of its jaw (from mouth to gill) seems to have gone rather pinkish with some small furry-looking white growth on it. Is this just a fungus growth and if so, will Melafix take care of it? The fish itself seems to be doing ok, swimming around eating when fed. Any possible help appreciated! I'll try to post a pic if requested. Thanks!

sounds like it could be fungus. Remove affected fish to hospital tank if possible. Swabbing fungus patch with iodine may be sufficient to cure problem. If not, EITHER treat with fungicidal medication (e.g Jungle Fungus Eliminator in US, Anti-Fungus Remedy in UK) OR a .3% salt solution.
Salt and medications affect the cycle so monitoring water quality during treatment is essential. If left untreated, fungus can spread very quickly and kill the fish. How often do you do water changes and how much?

Unfortunately I don't really have another tank to transfer the fish to. Just a goldfish bowl which I'm loathe to use for obvious reasons. Could I just treat the entire tank with fungicidal medication?

I do an about one-third water change every week to week and a half. Ammonium/nitrite/nitrate levels were all normal last I checked right after I noticed the fish problems.

I would treat the entire tank anyways as it's possible it may have already spread to the other fish.

Hm, well I currently started the second treatment with Jungle Lab's Fungus Clear along with some Melafix although I'm not sure if it was fungus cause the fish doesn't seem to have gotten any better. The white stuff is gone but now it (the lower jaw area between the mouth and gill opening) looks like a big open sore or something. Can't get a clear look cause the guy's constantly moving and his swimming has started to get a bit jerky. Still eats though. Any other ideas what I might be dealing with?
