ok i have a jewel vision 180 and so far i have one fish its a dart fish and im gonna be getting a clownfish soon but was wanting to know what other fish can go in with a dart fish and a clownfish.

i was thinking about a cardinal fish or a tomato clownfish or maroon clownfish but not sure if they will be ok in the same tank.

and ideas would be very greatful thanks :)

never mix different species of clownfish...maroon clownfish are from the premnas genus...they are the most aggressive of the clowns...and they need to be paired from the start...if one of the pair dies...finding it a new male is impossible...they will not take on a new male.

if you want a pair of clownfish get 2 very small clowns your talking about 1.5 inches big...and the most dominant one will develop into a female and the less dominant into a male which will stay smaller than the female

cardinal fish are good community species although they prefer dimmer lighting and plenty of hiding places.

clown gobies well most gobies for that matter are very good tank mates.

some small reef safe wrasse such as flashers or six line are very placid tank mates also

royal grammas are very nice but can be a bit arsey

orchid dottybacks - psuedochromis fridmani (not the scientific name) is one of about 3 semi placid dottybacks...if you do decide to buy one make sure it is that species and not another with a different common name

one thing to remember when choosing fish for a marine tank...dont mix fish that are the same colour and have the same body shape or you will have world war 3 on your hands...most marine fish have an aggressive side...although there are some species which can be kept together such as clowns...if you want more information on which can be kept in groups...do some research and then come back on here and query us with any questions you have.

thanks for the reply. the reason i thought about the tomato or maroon clownfish was because there not the same colour as the clownfish (nemo) but i never thought about them being the same shape that they may fight lol

anymore help on other fish that can go with a dart fish and clownfish are welcome thanks

dont mix clowns and damsels...damsels are very aggressive and should IMO be kept in species tanks...clowns are damsels and they will fight to death sometimes

i beg to differ.. i have 2 yellow tail damsels with a pair of clowns and i see no aggression AT ALL!!!! between them.. they dont even notice eachother.. if any of the 2 were aggressive its the clown bullying the damsels.. i think you just hit luck really with the damsels or best to maybe get the damsels small first..

Not being funny there superman, your tank is pretty new, people are finding constantly that damsels and clowns do not mix long term. There may be one or two that you could drop lucky with, generally they are not a good combination.

Excellent tank

i was thinking about a cardinal fish You could have a cardinal but everyone knows what I am going to say now, they are boring

In a tank your size it would be wise not to mix damsel species

and ideas would be very greatful thanks :)

:hi: welcome to TFF

We would love to see some photos of your tank and know a little about you your tank specs and long term goal.

If you do choose clowns, think about getting a pair, they are lovely to watch and there is something very sad about a clown by him/herself. Try to also get a coral with long polyps for them to host with, however not one that would be iritated by the clowns. People have had success with Pussy coral, hairy mushrooms, Toadstool :good:

You could also think about:

A goby
Scarlet hawk (although if you have small shrimps and snails he may eat them, but they are so full of charactor that I don't mind losing a few snails, although mine is well feed and doesn't appear to have eaten any of the snails and shrimps)
Flame back Angel
Anthias
Flasher wrasse -need a lid as they jump
Fairy wrasse - jumpers
orchid dotty back

to name but a few :good:

thanks for the replys ppl. sorry but my the camera that i have is on my phone and doesnt take good pics. but my tank is a jewel vision 180 bowed front.
i have decided im gonna get 2 clownfish.
the flame back angel looks really nice but would it be ok with my dart fish.
also the fairy wrasse looks nice aswell.
so will the flame back angel and fairy wrasse be ok with my dart fish and when i get 2 clownfish ??
i did have a few hermit crabs but i put them back as i was scared if they got a hold of my dart fish
oh and the saltwater i get is from the north sea as thats what i was told i could do as this is what they do at my lfs
p.s my dart fish looks lonely in the big tank all on his own

Hiya hope your prepared for attack on using seawater in your tank as it's not recommended but I know quite a few people with stunning tanks that use seawater or even mix with tap instead of ro. Hun if it works for you you go for it. You will often find people taking answers straight from a book with no experience on the specific question.

I would get more hermits again tho they will only eat you fish if they are sick or dead and the crabs and snails are a vital part of the tanks cuc

As long as your sea water is coming from a clean, pollutant free area you should be fine - however do some testing on it :good:

Where abouts do you live and where are you collecting the water?

ok i might get a few hermit crabs but im not keen on getting snails
im going to continue to use sea water from the sea as its cheaper for me and i have had my dart fish for about 3 and a half weeks now and he seems to be doing ok in the water but hes just lonely as no other fish in the tank yet but i do 25% water changes every 2nd night when i do my malawi cichlid tank. :)

i get the water from a place called boddam in the north east of scotland its a nice clean harbour and this is where ive been told to get the water from but when the tide is coming in. :)

Perfect time to collect your water...would be tempted to collect away from a harbour but..even just round coast a little in case of fuel from boats etc... as ste says many use this and i'm one of the tap water users myself....used it for years b4 r o came on the scene and still prone to use it with good quality dechlorinator and liquid filter media added. That is a brilliant water change regime you are doing..be proud of it, most change about once a week or even every two weeks.
