I have two of these.

I took them from someone I swap with occasionally as "male sulphurheads".

There is no sign of sulphur, except maybe under the chin.

They are both about 12 cm long. The one not shown has eggs spots, and an orange tinge to the anal fin. The shape is a bit like my "Red Empress", - fairly deep in the body.

When I got them, I thought they would colour up, but they have not really changed in a year. They are nice fish, I would just like to ID them. Could they be females?

Thanks, Kevin

Wow they are lovely, if i realised that what they would turn into i would have kept them myself :D

i wish i could help and am deeply sorry they are not what they were sold to me as, as the only reason i was getting rid of them was to make room for all the mbuna i got :good:

My LFS regularly sell them but i can't for the life of me think what they are called

I'll post back when i remember/have paid a visit to my LFS :good:

To me the head shape looks like Haplochromis. As to what I've no idea. Closest I can see might be Otopharynx lithobates group. Prob not though.

Hap

looks like a hap posibly one of the Protomelas take a look at the profiles on cichlid forum .com

OK, I've used the leads from here, and from a post on another forum, researched pictures on the net using those leads, and the favourite ID is:

Protomelas Spilonotus. - Also known as the Sulphur - Head Hap! So Druchii was right after all.

It seems they don't all have the sulphur blaze anyway.

It seems they are females, although I have read that the males can take some time to colour up. Someone also suggested they could be sub dominant (maybe because of the Red Empress relative)?

Thanks for the leads, and Druchii, not complaining, they are nice fish, and you know I am always up for a try.

So then let's hope Dru doesn't go beat up the guy who sold them to him as sulphur heads if they are, after all he was only passing onto you what he was sold them as :hey: Joke by the way ;)
