well i got 1 female and put her with my male guppys, she was fine. a week later i got another one and put her in the same tank. seemed ok, then i had to leave. when i came back 3 hours later i checked the tank to find the newest female, that is 2 times the size of the smaller one, getting beat up on. i dont know if fish bleed, but i think she is bleeding on the top of her head. what can i do. there are no pet stores open until tomorow or i would go ask them. i feel guilty and want to help her. i have already separated her into a breeding net in my other 10 gallon. that has more stable levels.

Generally you should keep a minimum of 4 female bettas in a tank to distribute the aggression equally and for them to sort out a pecking order!

Definatly go out and get 2 more, even if you're overstocked a little it will help spread out the aggression. Take the other 2 out and rearrange your tank, make sure you've got some plants, caves, or some other little places for them to chill out in. It will take them a day or two to figuring out who the boss will be, but they should be fine. How many male guppies are in there? Could be risky to them, if you don't want to get more female bettas, I would just remove the aggressive one, or return one.

Also isolate the one that's hurt the most right now - keep the water clean w/ a pinch of aquarium salt. Hopefully she'll heal on her own but I don't know how badly she's hurt so I couldn't really give you a for sure answer.

Hope things work out.

Get a hospital tank and heal the female.

Bettas are aggressive territorial fish.... and to make matters even more interesting... they have personality. The whole female community tank.... it is a balance. There is a packing order. Always will be. There will always be a battle for the top.

These aren't goldfish. They don't mind being alone. The only time they want to attract another betta is to spawn. Even then... it can be a painful event.
