Help With A New Sump

Cool tank's guy's

Aquascaper> PM me your address and I'll sent it over to you. (can send for free using my works postroom)

What is the surface scum? skimmate sort of thing?

The surface scum will be undissolved organic waste and any free floating diatoms/algae. If you run a skimmer then you'll find that this won't be a huge problem anyway.

The skimmer I have is a seaclone and as you know there only good as a paperweight of a bin ornement. so I've got the powerhead off it and it's sittling doing nothing. When the new sump goes in I was hoping to get a V2 for it. However I'm using the ecosystem method so I may forget about the skimming alltogether.

Did you want some Caulerpa

Yup, also plain old dust from the room and skin oils ;)

So the tanks got some water salt and little bit of lemon juice in and I'm going to run a powerhead in it for a day or to to get all the nastys out

So we're on the way

they are called a jenny rat cage and they sell them in pets at home for about £69 ...

Yes I know I got it about 4 months ago but with the introduction of my new rat I had to make it into a two tier cage with a large sheet of acrylic to divide it into two. I wasn't claming to have mad it myself!

Took the advice and went down to a swimming-pool outlet near me and got some 1/2" pipe work including the ball valve for the return from the sump. ( 5 elbow 1 tee 1 ball valve £15.00)

And at the LFS got more silicon, hoseconnectors, 12mm hose off cut and some sand

Also reserved a very nice Coral Beauty

And with that some more LR and food and 2 snails and 3 hermet crabs and in goes on and on and on .......

(had to limit myself, can see it when i gat home and the GF goes crazy)

i cant stand rats "shivers" they make my skin crawl. i can stand anything else just not rats. speaking of... better feed my blues and my pink toes.

Just a word of warning.................don't rely on the ball valve 100%

They are prone to failure especially with saltwater, etc. running through them. It doesn't take much residue to prevent the ball from sitting properly and thus not making a watertight seal. Always make sure there's enough room in the sump to handle a back syphon and a couple of holes in the return line where it goes into the tank does wonders ;)

Having had a 40g sump flood it's not a nice experience to wake up to

No Methinks not! some people have troble with the ball valves because: (Plumbers hat on)

The seals inside work on compression but not two much, when you over tighten a fitting the seal pop,s out of it's housing causing a leak!

Die_Grinder> blues and my pink toes.?????

I stand corrected, the only ball valve i've ever used got food and algae matter trapped around the seal and this left enough of a gap for the tank to back syphon gradually overnight leaving me with a nice smelly puddle in the morning.................so they're still crap :p

Aqua 'Two Holes' Scaper ;)
