we have had a case of white spot in our tank not sure what caused it but have used whit spot treatment, as per instructions but is dosnt seem to be clearing up wondered if any one else has any ideas
:)

What treatment did you use and how long have you been treating the tank with it?

Whitespot can take a long time to treat and can come back after it has seemingly been cured; basically the whitespot parasite has 5 larval stages(correct me anyone if im wrong) and it is imune to meds while it is in the visable white spot stage of its growth.
The only times when the pararsite can be effectivly treated is before the white spots appear and after they have disapeared. There is not alot you can do while it is in the visable white spot stage of its growth- turning the tank temp up to 26 degrees will help this stage pass faster, only then can the meds take effect although i would still treat the fish even when the parasite is in the visable stage as there may be fish who have it but aern't showing signs yet.

Don't be too disheartened; it is a horrible desease and many people experience fish casualtys while they have it but it will get cured in its own time.
If you want to buy any replacement fish for any you might have lost, i would leave buying them for at least a month just to make sure all signs/traces of the desease has been wiped out.

what if i've got the same problem but i've now got 10 palty fry in a breeder net? Will treatment kill them? I was thinking of buying methylene blue because i used malachite green before i had the fry and it didn't work. Just killed my plants.

I've only had whitespot once and that was ages ago but at the time i did have fry in the tank that was affected; i used the whitespot med by Interpet which cured the whitespot and i experienced no fry casualtys and it didn't kill my plants.
As for changing meds, check on the med bottle/instruction leaflet to see wether it is okay to use the Interpet med with it(it will say if it can't) as some meds can't be used with others; if you are to change meds try and make sure as much as posible of the old med is removed from the water before using the new one.

If you are to use the Interpet med brand to treat the whitespot, do a 40% water change after 4days of it been in the tank before adding a new correct dose.

Do you know if the med was malachite green or methylene blue based?

I'm guessing i'd just halve the dose for fry?

I wouldn't treat the fry at all; if they are to get it they will be unlikely to be stronger enough to recover from it anyway and since whitespot meds tend to be so powerful you may do them more harm by treating them.

So basically i'm screwed!?

I dunno whats more important out of treating the white spot or sorting out my water quality.

Whats wrong with the water quality?
If you treat the white spot properly, it should be gone within 2-3 weeks.

my tank hasn't cycled yet so nitrites and nitrates are running high! but i'm gonna start doing water changes every day until it gets better.

The only treatment i have right now is a malachite green based treatment but being as i've got platy fry and neons i think it might kill them. Plus neons aren't very tollerant to salt either.

When I had white spot I used CLOUT, it is affective in one dose and cures Ick in 24hrs.
 where can i get CLOUT from ive never heard of it,

whitespot med by Interpet ive been using this and have turned temp up to 26 degrees but the seenm to still get worse, we have done water changes, ect have enen over dosed ( not deliberately) but does seem to be going, we have now lost about 1/3 of our fish including the stripped cat fish in the tank,
any more ideas

Clout is an american med so you won't be able to get it over here, turn temp up to 30 if you have no scaless fish add some salt and cover the tank with a blanket once the spots have disappeared off the fish do a gravel vac, and add the correct amount of med back to the water removed from the tank.

Is sea salt that you can buy from supermarkets safe to use in a tank?
