As you can see, I have a sand bottom and no dirt in my tank.

This is what's in my tank:
live plants
driftwood
6 corydoras
11 ember tetras
3 GBRs
ETA - I have one to three shrimp. Not sure if more than one is still alive.

I currently have some plants floating that haven't been planted yet, but there's no dirt attached to them.

Looks like black gravel to me, have you recently moved a piece of drift wood from another tank that has black gravel? As it can stick to the underside and falls off later.

Ding! Ding! Ding! I think we have a winner.

Seriously, I have a piece of drift wood right next to the "black stuff" that was in a 10 gallon tank with a black substrate. It's odd that It is just now falling off, but it is likely the explanation.

Thanks so much. I really didn't think of that.

Glad to help ? I had the same thing a couple of weeks ago, the fish knock the gravel off when they nose around it, especially the bristle noses and Loach
