Hey peeps, we need help with a flea infestation. We have two 10 month old cats that only ever had fleas when they were 6 weeks old and not since. With the warmer weather here can only assume eggs hatched or someone visiting bought them in and we are really infested..

The problem is in their bedroom (being house cats, they have a whole room to themselves). So far our efforts are as follows:

1. Treated frontline about a week and half ago.
2. At the time hovered the room, washed everything and used flea spray on everything.
Still a problem that we find them leaping on our legs when we enter their room so yesterday..
3. Got superstrong spray stuff that almost killed us.
4. Flea collars.
5. Washed everything and anything that has been in contact with them.
Should also add that we have been flea combing and drowning them as well.

Just gone to change their litter and had 2 jump on me and my partner came in, another 3 on him...When we have done the flea stuff, we have hovered prior, got rid of hoover contents, sprayed, closed off the room for longer than recommended, then aired and hoovered again.

We are at a loss what to do.. Any tips or help would be great as also this is getting expensive. I think the cats themselves are alright with dosage frontline and collars (though at the moment we are taking these off at night as one of our cats is not sensible and managed to get her jaw caught even with it tight but not strangling!). Think the main problem is the room itself help!

Sounds like the problem is the room is becoming reinfested each time. You could take the cats out the house, de-flea the ENTIRE house, meanwhile get flea stuff that kills them in a couple of hours (not sure what its called but it does exist), then dont reintroduce the cats to the house until all the fleas are dead. Also try to avoid carrying the fleas yourself at this time by avoiding contact with the cats whilst you are de-fleaing the house, until they themselves are flea-free.

I know its a fuss, but sounds like you have a horrid infestation.

Thanks for that, do you have any ideas what the stuff is as the stuff we had was pretty potent.

I know it wasnt frontline spot on. It was suitable for kittens I know, as it was the only thing suitable we could find when we got our kitten home and realised he was swarming with fleas. It killed them all within a couple of hours. I think I remember my dad giving him a bath, so maybe it was a flea dip?

You might need to put the cats in a cattery after treatingthem and fumigate the whole house

first all, either dump out and WASH out the litter boxes with a mild bleach concentration, or buy new litter boxes - our vets told us this is where alot of eggs and fleas reside.

vacuum and wash every surface, then get that alcohol antibacterial spray and spray everywhere - - under couches, in between cushions, baseboards, mattresses, pillows, closet, inside drawers

flea bathe your cats, then a few days later (so as not to irritate their skin) flea drop them and collar them

keep up on the vacuuming, pretty much daily, to get rid of any fleas that hatch from any eggs that manage to survive your first cleaning assault.

do this for about 6 weeks. - - it should get rid of the flea problem.

and ofcourse, given the season, any time you are outside or over a friends with animals....change your clothes the moment you get home - stick them immediately in the washer machine to kill any "friends" who may have come home with you, and spray down shoes and purses with the alcohol antibacterial spray to kill any hitch-hikers

good luck!!! fleas SUCK

Advantage flea spot on is the best one as it also covers ear mites or something, and certain worms. You can get this from your vet, and they also sell great house sprays. I know they're house cats but it's probably best to treat with a spot on each month as a precaution.

Feel for you though, fleas are a pain in the butt

Thanks so much for all the great tips guys, we shall win this battle...eventually. With the spot on treatments we used frontline and it only mentions to use 3 months later, doesnt state if can use a month later etc, we dont want to harm our babies trying too soon again..

just been talking to missus biffster about your
problem and it sounds a nasty one but its no good doing the room
once it needs do be done everyday for about three months
she says as you need to brake the cycle of the flea breeding
and dropping eggs so spray one day vacuum and spray the next
day you can also buy flea traps from good pet shops or mail order

for some strange reason i double posted there and i only
posted it once can one of the mods take one of them off
please thank you

thanks for that the biffster :) Ive heard of garlic before but unsure how the cats would take it, would be worth ago as well as other benefits! We are in full swing, washing, vacuuming, binning, combing and spraying, we should win in the end, it is alreay starting to look on the decrease, as only couple on the girls and none sighted or felt in the room, though need to keep up so eggs dont hatch and we start again! Thanks for the help everyone, will see how long this takes!

I use frontline on my younger ones and it works only up to 5 weeks per pipette, so you can deffo use it before 3 months, unless they've brought out a new one that lasts longer
