hiya,

this is my first time using a forum, so please be gentile

I have been losing a lot of fish lately to an unknown disease, the symptoms include repertory distress for 24 hours and then the fish appear to have some kind of Fit...or body paralysis happen to them They start darting and rolling around (not swimming but rolling in summersaults) and depending on the breed of fish it infects this has lasted for somewhere between 24hours to 4 days, its horrible watching my fish die like this, this started when I bought some new fish, once I noticed them struggling to breath I pulled them from my main tank into a fully set up Quarantine tank were three died from this and four survived (the survivors are now living happily in the main tank).....the fish were treat for gill flukes and parasites. but since then I have set up the tank as a small tetra tank but I have lost a few tetras in the past few days with these symptoms, the water parameters are fine., and the Q tank has been running as a tetra tank for a fortnight. the fish which first died of this disease were bought at the end of last month.

can anyone help?

That sounds really weird.. i want to ask some Q's.
What do you feed them and how often?
How to you bring new fish into your tank? besides floating the bag ontop.
What breed are the ones that are dieing and do they all the sudden stop eating?
Where is the tank? living room? next to the window? bedroom?

I feed them with flakes, once a day.....not a lot as the tank has been running for only 1 month, Filter was well established as was running in my main tank for 3 month and the water and gravel for the Q tank was taken from the main tank when it was set up

When buying new fish i float them in the bag for 15 mins then slowly add water every extra 15mins so they can adapt to the new water conditions and then catch them into a net and throw away the bagged water (you never know what you can get from other tanks)
The tank is located next to my Q tank in the dining room it has no light in it but is near a window were the blinds are always closed but when the first fish died the tank was located in my kitchen well away from any light sources, at first I thought this was the cause so moved i. Also all of the fish that have been in it in the past month have died of this illness
the ones that have died were:- two rams and one angel (within 24 hours of buying) then i had a ruby shark and a pictus cat in there for a bit, these were relised ok back into the main tank after a week and appear to be very happy at the mo ) lately Past week i have lost 2 rummy nosed tetras and a neon, there is 3neon left, a guppy and a glass cat. They stop eating when the breathing problem starts but ok before then none appear to be ill at the moment

oopppps i ment not all of the fish that have been in the tank have died :eek:D

How long has your tank(s) been set up?
they could be cycling still and this would be causing the deaths and breathing issues.

As I wrote in my last event, the tank has been set up for a month, the water and gravel were taken from the main tank and the filter has been running in my main tank as a second filter for 3-4 months, I have tested the water every two-three days and there are no problems with the tank cycling.

But never the less I bought a brand new tank yesterday and put them all into it, the new tank has a light in, so im now treating them on a mild antibiotic and im prepared for this tank to Cycle as the filter is new as well and wont have any of the bacteria needed to help get rid of the poisons in the water

I cannot say why my fish were dieing but I know it wasn’t through cycling, I set up a 4 foot tank and ive never seen the paralysis thing happen before, it is really horrifying. but I just hope that whatever the disease was it has been left in the old tank )

Thanks

My bad i didnt read that last post, could the tank have been in contact with some sort of chemical or soap ?

how often do you do water changes? and how big are the tanks they're dieing in?
The only thing that springs to mind to me is maybe a water issue becuase in a 4 foot tank water quality would be more stable so maybe thats the issue?

but i hope you figure out the problem real soon :(

I finally figured out what it was, it was a horrible mistake. :-(

I positioned my tank by a window but always left the blackout blinds closed so that no strong light would hit the tank, I work most of the day and my boyfriend doesn’t start work until late in the day. Unfortunately my boyfriend didn’t realize that I was keeping the blinds closed for a reason and thought he was helping the sick fish out by giving them light (as there was no bulb in the Q tank), so was opening the blinds and with the strong sun we have been having lately it was knocking the tank temp up to 87+, I noticed it happen on Friday as I took a half day off and saw that another fish (neon) was starting to gasp so I quickly closed the blinds and did a very small water change (with cool water) and watched as the neon slowly got better

So if anyone else notices this kind of death in there fish……check the Temp of the water, I feel so silly as I never even noticed that this was happening. Oh yeh and ive told my boyfriend how to stop boiling my fish.

Thanks for all of the help and replies.

only thing i could think of was some sort of poision, my other one was you got crappy fish from walmart or something

im going to keep a close eye on them from now on as they are in a new tank and the filter has just been set up, what should i look for incase this was from poisoning and the rise in temp was not the answer? :/
