Hi! I have a beautiful big aquarium over 48 inches waiting...But I cannot find ammonia anywhere!!Have checked some hardware stores, but none have pure ammonia!Help!Am in London,UK! Also, my aquarium is second hand,it hasn't been used for a year. Any advice? I am waiting to start doing the fishless cycle. Any info appreciated, I want a very healthy aquarium. How do I achieve this? Where do I start? Millions of thanks in advance, am bit confused on all this being a first-timer!! Millions of thanks in advance :)

Please help!
Damsel in distress!
Wants fish to be happy and healthy!!

Set your tank up all ready, get your filter turned on and running and add few flakes of food like you would for few small fish. After couple of days stick couple of shrimp or neons in and leave them in there for acouple of weeks and this will build up your filter bactira levels. Remember add new fish gradually so filter can build up and cope with increase in the waste.

If you really want to do a fisfless cycle, you can get ammonia from homebase stores in the cleaning products section.

I have seem alot ammonia sold in walmart in canada, check it out in London ah wait does londer have walmart?

Many thanks for your help! I got the ammonia from Homebase. I hope it's pure, as cleaning products don't really seem to list all the ingredients. Even this one says Ammonia 9,5% at the back??

Does anybody know the procedure with second hand tanks? I am thinking of cleaning it all with ammonia tonight, including filters etc, and then starting the fishless cycle? Will have some plants in the tank, tho, hope they help with getting the bacteria correct :)

Procedure for second-hand tanks......

....clean very, very thoroughly, try to check integrity of all seals whilst you clean it.

Take it outside somewhere (if you can, if not, make sure you have towels nearby) make sure it is on somewhere very flat (flat board/wood/unit with something underneath e.g. polystyrene, foam etc). And fill it.

Stand back........check for leaks......I have left mine overnight like this when I got my tanks (all were/are second-hand).......just to make sure that they don't leak.

Empty the tank (don't tip it up....it will probably break, empty using a hose).

Now thoroughly clean the tank again with clean water.

Then carry on with the setup indoors.

good luck...

EDIT.......you didn't mention what the filters were........type etc..........but I would be very careful about what you use to clean the filter.............and buy new substrate...
