We are having the same problem with our goldfish

They keep dying one at a time and have the same problem, go all spastic and cant swim then just die while all the other fish at the time seem fine

I've examined each fish and they have no marks or signs of disease on them

I cant see that it is the tap water because we have another tank full of Danios and they are fine and they are all changed with the same tap water

Remember Danios are very hardy though. Maybe it's worth taking a water sample to a good aquatic shop and seeing if they get the same results as you? It's possible you have a faulty test kit.

Well actually it would matter if your test kit was faulty. I don't mean to be rude or offensive but how do you know for definite that the temp is fine? People are trying to help and the only way to do that is to break it down by asking questions.
I do hope you find a solution but an instant solution isn't always possible and having a bit of patience when you're being asked questions might just help you.

im guessing you dont have a thermometer then,
do you have a heater?

How can they possibly have tested your water temperature unless they came to your house? Whatever sample you took to the shop would have cooled down by the time you got there.

Of course it matters if your test kit is faulty?

Hmmm you said you had a "few" Neon Tetras. I just say this because when you keep them in small groups it isn't uncommon for them to eventually fade out, become listless and die. If the group was 6+ then that shouldn't be the problem.

If your water is fine as you would have us believe, then your fish should be fine.
If the water you are trying to keep the black neons in is too hard,(alkaline) or too warm,,then fishes will slowly weaken and die.
If you are using chemicals other than a full function dechlorinator in the tank ,this too can affect fishes.
If the tank has no nitrAte readings and is not heavily planted,then this would lead most to believe that somthing has compromised the biological filter for as others have noted (through much expierience)it is quite difficult to achieve zero nitrAtes without near 100 percent water changes perhaps twice to three times weekly.
If biological filter is not working or non existent, then this could also affect the fishes.
Washing filter material in tapwater containing chlorine or chloramines can destroy significant amount of bacteria.
Poor acclimation of fishes from one source of water to another can have negative effect as well.
most would agree that as much as 90 percent of all fish health issues are directly related to water quality or a lack thereof.
Take care of your water,and fishes can take care of themselves.
don't be so quick to dismiss your water as possible source of problem nor the prospect of purchasing sick fish from the outset.
Also note that many of us have seen fish store employee' that could not give you the correct time if they were wearing five wrist watches, little lone be able to read test results accurately.
Personally,,, I'm leaning towards an uncyled aquarium and water that may not suit the fishes with respect to pH,Gh,and or temperature.

I've started to wonder if GH is more important than people give credit too. I suspect my water is hard-very hard and am wondering if it may have something to do with why my Platys are fine and Honey Gouramis are sickly. Have in fact today ordered a GH and KH test kit to see.

Tess you should listen to all this instead of getting annoyed, some of the most experienced people you'll ever find (not me) are on these forums.

Keeping fish is more complicated than a lot of people realise, the lfs`s do more damage than good in my own personal opinion and that doesn`t bode well for the customer nor the fish.

I would add to roadmasters reply by saying that a lot of plants can also be responsible for bad water quality, i.e plants that are sold as 'aquatic' plants are mis sold which then leads to plants decaying and upsetting the levels needed to keep a healthy aquarium.
There are a lot of possibilities as to why you`re having the problems you are and we`ll all do our best to help you. All we ever ask for is a little bit of patience so that a solution can be found.
I fully understand it`s frustrating but becoming annoyed or flippant doesn`t help anyone, least of all you and your fish.

They tested my water and told me the correct temperature, its a mature tank ive had it running for a very long time, there were 12 black neons and Ive got 7 left and one betta


Ive used my testing kit on my mums tank and it works fine, different area and tap water



So what temerature does it need to be for black neons?
