i have a cichild its a male... i was told once he's colours come in he would get 3 pointed front fins on his head, he'll develope blue colouring and red on his body? or fins? he currently is mostly grey has a leopard print on the top half of his back fin and is starting to form blue tinges in his face hes about <--------------> this big his fins lower and upper tend to have an angle wing point to them... the females have smaller fins and less colouring i was told he'd grow to about <------------------------------> this big BUT my research shows he looks more like a blue dempsey then any other pics i have found of cichlids... but i have no idea

CAN anyone please help me???

Called the petshop i bought him at for $12 and the person on the other end was very rude saying ohhh too many cichlids to know....(instead of looking at the tank i told this guy it was in :< ).... and i'm 1.75 hours away too far to take the fish in...bad enough driving him home poor darling but he's A ok :)

anyone have a juvenile image of this fish preff a male? might help out in picking this fish :(

his tail kind has an unusual shape } like this he also has one dominant vertical line from eye to back with 3 little ones below it not so obious and not so long... evey now and then he lifts the fin on his head and it tends to spike rather then flow like a normal fin. btw the leopard markings i was talking about are yellow and black similar to the guppy's tail.

i'm sorry for going on but i'd LOve to know what he is... and how big so i can accomidate for him

(btw i bought this fish in a shop called "family pets and aquariums" in high street geelong, victoria, australia... also i was told this type of cichlid is OK in a community tank with other kinds of fish...... so far he's quiet and peacful)

here are some pics that kinda look like him.....

i just dont know.....

From your description i am 100% positive you have german blue rams which is what the picture in my avatar is. (Its my fish too by the way)

thank you for helping out... but he looks different to that one.... but i really do appreciate your time thanx again :)

Hmm....by the sounds of it, if they told you it wouldn't get any bigger than..............................................that :fun: then it's not going to be a malawi peacock. Those fish will get much bigger....I'll atleast have to agree with another post and say it's possible to be a ram but if limited to that size, definately a dwarf cichlid. Can you get a digi cam and take a shot of it????? I'm very curious....

I FOUND IT!!!

thank you for your interest and time guys i really do appreciate it.....

here we go.......

YAY!!! :kana:

looks like you have got a cockatoo chichlid, or is it another kind of apisto?

your right you hit the nail on the head!..... i'm told all the fins will trun red.... guessing her that it makes in a "double red" variety....... can you cross breed the reds with the gold cockatoos etc?

how big do they really grow?... i'v heard 9cm 5cm and 10cm for the males?

i'm just soo happy to find out what he is so now he can get everything he needs and be a happy chappy.... (thou i must admit he looked peacful enough b4)

bumblebee dude what kinda fish is that at the bottom of your sig? PM me with the answer since i dont visit this forum enough to actually check this thread(sorry guys) but i want that fish, thats wicked looking

You were on the right track to call your mystery cichlid a double red, but actually its a triple red Apistogramma cacatuoides. Although beautiful they are difficult to care for sometimes. Most other apistogrammas, as well as german blue rams, have a notorious reputation for dropping dead unexpectedly!! Luckily cacatuoides have their own reputation within the apisto. community for being one of the easiest to breed and keep. One especially important direction to follow for keeping good health in a tank with apistos is water quality (both the harshness and the ph levels). Have fun with the cacatuoides though, all dwarf cichlids have incredible amounts of personality and are always fun to watch.

owww..... ok mines doing nicley for now... he has 2 lil girlies to occupy his time... so i hope all stays ok thanx guys
