Okay so I have two sick males.

It all started when we rescued a blue VT from a Tetra tank at Pets Supplies Plus because the fish guy wouldn't remove him and put him in another tank. Other than having short fins from being bitten and nipped, he was fine:

Well I put him in one of my barracks for about 30 minutes while I scrubbed and cleaned his other tank for him. Now, 3 days after we bought him, this is what he looks like:

The blue VT is in a 7 gallon isolation tank with 1 tbsp of salt per 5 gallons.

Well now my oldest and first betta Megamouth is looking very sick. He has a grayish patch on his side, his anal fin is literally melting off, he won't eat, he's gasping for air, and he's got a growth over his "nostril" area.

With Megamouth I just saw that he wasn't acting like himself last nite, early this morning. He was nose down in his Java moss and not moving. I tapped the tank fearing he was dead and he shot up to the surface and stayed there. I got him out of the barracks and into a 1 gallon hospital tank with 1/2 tsp of aquarium salt.

PLEASE! I need to know what it is and how to treat it. I'm afraid they aren't gonna make it and I'm gonna have to euthanize another of my boys as it is since he has dropsy. If I can save these guys, please tell me how!!

1st fella

his fins look clamped? does it look like finrot? water stats?

2nd fella, the grey patch, does it look like fungus? can u describe the growth over his nostrils?

The first guy is clamping his fins. He has a white fungus-looking growth along his body where his anal fin meets his body.

The second boy's patch is also along where his anal fin meets his body, the patch looks less like fungus and more like a burn, but he is nowhere near the heater. The growth on his nostril does look like fungus though. Oh no, he's nose up and gasping at the bottom of the tank!

I'm so confused! All of this struck last night!!! What can nearly kill an entire barrack of bettas in 24 hours??

It really really seems like fin rot in reverse. Instead of started at the fins and spreading to the body, its starting at their bodies and spreading to their fins.

Oh god, this hasn't been a good day...

if it is collumnaris and an air stone to the tank - collumnarise thrives in low oxygen water!

good idea :)

have u any meds with u at all? if so, what?

from what uve sed i dont believe it to be dropsy, but something more serious

lets hope we can get all this sorted :)

Whatever it was just killed my oldest and first betta Megamouth and my disabled boy Titan. The other two that were in the barrack are Big Red and the no name VT who I suspect brought the disease with him.

I went out and bought Jungle Fungus Clear tablets and am treating the whole tank right now.

God, I hate this. I just euthanized my PK boy on mother's day for an unknown disease (suspect mouth rot and then dropsy) and now these guys.

Btw I added an airstone last night in case it was columnaris but they still died.

i think u have a very bad strain of it tbh

it sounds like its killing very quick

have u tested your water?

i feel for u huni, i had u euthanize my hm girl, dropsy and septicemia, its awful

fingers crossed for u x

Thank you.

I am hoping to save my SD Big Red who is in the same barracks yet hasn't shown any signs of disease as of yet. I am treating with Fungus Clear, some salt, and an bubble stone. I've successfully treated columnaris before but I've never had such an aggressive onset of it. It all happened between 2am and 12pm today.

I now know I DO have to euthanize my red and black butterfly VT Whirlpool. He has severe dropsy. We've been trying to fight it for 2 weeks.

All these deaths are coming at a bad time. Way too close together, last month I had to euthanize my only plakat. It really hurts but I'm glad to know people who understand.

fingers crossed u can get this treated

im so sorry that ur gonna have to euthanize ur lil fella, big hugs xx

Well a bit of good news and another bit of bad news.

Whirlpool, my boy who had pine-coned scales is feeling and looking 90% better. His fins are regrowing from his tail-biting ways, his scales have flattened, he's back to swimming normally and floating and sinking just fine. I'm amazed.

The blue VT died this morning and Big Red, my red SD, is now showing tattered fins and white fluffy growth on his tail. He's still eating and not as lethargic as the boys who died were so I'm holding out hope that I can save 3 out of 4.

Thanks for the help and kind words.

Great news about Whirlpool :good: but so sorry you lost you other little boy :-( I hope your other one pulls through for you :good:
