Hi, fairly new to the hobby. Had our tank setup for about a year and this fish has been in there the entire time.
Today, noticed the Cory has a mass/lump under its belly with some redness (pictured). Not quite sure what it is, so looking for some guidance. What i have read so far online said could possibly be gut blockage or constipation. Also I read that they dont particularly do well with the gravel substrate we have and sometimes get injuries. Just worried its an infection or parasite and could spread to the tankmates.

Only recent changes we have done:
-did a 50% water change last night and added water conditioner and clarifier at that time
-1 live plant was added (from petco) a couple weeks before
-3 new small angels and a cory was added about a month before

I am working on setup of a larger tank as it does have tankmates so I want to give them more room.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

You have only 1 cory in the tank?? They are shoaling and social fish and need to be in groups of 6+.
What size is the tank? Water parameters?

Lymphocystis causing hypertrophy is my guess. Fish can live with these growths but you need to keep a constant eye out for infection, and the redness where the lump meets the body suggests bacterial infection here. You're right that substrate is unfortunately not good at all for corys.
Do you have any water parameters as @Salty&Onion has mentioned? Also would you know the water hardness and ph?

I kinda inherited this one because the kids lost interest. At the time we got him the people at the petstore didn't give us any info except good with Angels. We now have 2 Cory, him and an albino. Planned on getting a few more Cory's after i upgrade the tank (as I read that detail much later). Other tank mates are the 4 angels. I think the tank is a 5.5g. I know it's too small for what's in there which is why I'm in the process of upgrading (and trying to keep up on water changes).

Regarding water params: I'm actually on my way to the petstore to get a test kit. I can post the outcome afterward. I've never done that before.

Angels can get up to 6 in, so even 1 won't work in a 29 gallon. If you get more and go with a sand substrate the corycats would be fine as far as stocking, I think. You should see about returning the angels to the pet store. As far as the injury, maybe keep a close eye on him? I am not too sure about medicating fish, as you don't have a qt tank and I have only medicated fish in qt. And only ever for minor fin rot.

I was told by a couple of our “experts” on the forum that a couple of angels would work in a 29G but I never did it.:dunno:

I think the cory would do well with salt treatment for the bacteria infection aspect. I know @Colin_T gives good advice on that. With regards to the lump, I'm guessing at Lymphocystis, (ive no experience with it), might point you in the right direction if you ask around about Lymphocystis though :dunno:

It’s not Lymphocystis. I had a goldfish with that.It has more of a cauliflower shape. Read up on Red Blotch Disease. I believe that’s what he has. A broad spectrum antibiotic such as Seachem Kanaplex should treat it. @Byron knows a lot about cories.
