Help On New Tank

i don't, but if you don't find anything in homebase then stick a post up in tropical chat asking for local members as they may be able to help you out some more.

in a big city like nottingham you'll find it somewhere!

Ask the staff in Homebase where it is. I looked round the Leeds shop for ages before finding in the cleaning/mops/brushes area.

That's exactly where it is in our grocery stores in the USA, right in the cleaning/mops/brushes areas!

Did you check & ask in Boots?

I got mine from there, it's classed as "Cleaning & Laundry Aid". (Although I have to say, I would never want to put this stinky stuff on my laundry!)

This is what it looks like:

:good:

Are you sure all of the plants you put in are aquatic?
I would make a post in the planted section here and ask those lovely folks.

Your tank is looking great though and that piece of bogwood is pretty amazing!
I can't wait to eventually see the tank cycled w/ some fish in it :D

I presume they are. i will post a pic over there.

You have me thinking now.

Thanks for the pic of the ammonia, i have sent it to the mrs and she has gone looking today.

One thing to watch for in LFS plants are plants with mixed white and green colors - anything with whites and such is not a fully underwater plant and will eventually deteriorate and break down into lots of ammonia.

I really like that wood piece you have. As with most decorating, the best looking decor usually results from some asymetry. I would try moving the wood to one side or the other a little and see if you don't like the look even more. Along those same lines you could even turn it a bit this way and that and see what you like best. My own best guess would be a move a couple of inches to the right and a twist of 10 or 20 degrees clockwise would add to the appeal. It would mean moving the corkscrew val though. Maybe it could even go to the front right corner area. I'm no decorator but I know what I like and I bet you know what you like too.
As far as cycling the tank, you can do lots of water changes without disturbing the cycle in the least. Just top up with ammonia after each water change. What that means is you can work on getting rid of the tea in your tank if that is a look that you don't like by using water changes. A large piece of wood like that is likely to cause your pH to drop some anyway so watch out for low pH and change water at least often enough to keep the pH above 6.5. A very low pH can stall the cycle's progress.

Thanks for the advice Oldman,

I cant really rotate the wood, it only just abouts fit in to the tank at the minute. I see what you mean about moving it left or right, i might have a go at that.

I think what im going to do is when the ammonia goes down to zero do about a 50% water change if the tea continues. Then top the ammonia back up again.

Thanks guys

Just been thinking about the cycling process.

I have a bio orb that i will be breaking down soon, with 2 chiclids in. Would i be able to use that filter media and put it in my Tetratec EX1200 to help jump start the cycling process?
